Vienna is the city of Christmas par excellence. With its Prater illuminated for the festive season, its large typical markets, and the fairy lights illuminating the Graben, its famous central pedestrian thoroughfare… To prolong the magic, you can visit the Sissi Museum, which offers a vivid insight into the life of the mythical empress. Also in the immense Hofburg complex, a visit to the Imperial Treasury is an unforgettable experience.

Viennese tradition goes hand in hand with the New Year’s Concert! Broadcast in over 90 countries, this concert is watched by tens of millions of spectators around the world every year. Imagine being inside the Golden Hall of the sublime Musikverein on 31 December… Like a dream come true, you’ll hear an effervescent bouquet of Viennese waltzes, worthy of the city’s legend, along with some fine rarities. For the 2026 edition, the Vienna Philharmonic is presenting an astonishing conductor: Yannick Nézet-Séguin. In just a few years, the Quebec conductor has established himself as one of the most engaging and admired conductors of his generation. This long-awaited summit meeting promises to be exceptional in every way!

SAINT-SYLVESTER CONCERT

Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra

Yannick Nézet-Séguin       Conductor

Program not revealed to this day.

The announcement sounded like a divine consecration. For the 2026 New Year’s concert, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra will be conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin. The relationship between the Quebec-born conductor and the legendary Austrian band began in 2010 and has continued to grow ever since. In 2023, the current director of New York’s Metropolitan Opera and the Philadelphia Orchestra delighted audiences at Schönbrunn Palace with his famous Sommernachtskonzert The culmination of their collaboration, the New Year’s Eve Concert is already proving to be one of the most exciting editions of recent years. Since 1939, the Neujahrskonzert has amazed the musical world. Its worldwide success was confirmed in the early 1960s when the programme was broadcast on television. Thanks are due to Willi Boskovsky (from 1955 to 1979) and Lorin Maazel (from 1980 to 1986) for conducting such memorable concerts for so long. Since the arrival of Herbert von Karajan in 1987, the Vienna Philharmonic has chosen its own conductors. To name the musicians chosen is to name the absolute crème de la crème of symphonic conducting: Carlos Kleiber (1989, 1992), Seiji Ozawa (2002), Nikolaus Harnoncourt (2003) and Riccardo Muti (seven times!). So we’re delighted that Yannick Nézet-Séguin, whose musicality and media personality deserve nothing but praise, is joining this philharmonic Olympus. Incidentally, he is the second French-speaking conductor (after Georges Prêtre) to lead the New Year’s Concert! Come and experience this unique moment in Vienna.
