Vienna promises a royal stay. The Austrian capital boasts an exceptional heritage. A visit to the Hofburg Palace, residence of the Habsburg dynasty for almost seven centuries, is a must. With jewels such as the Imperial Crown and the Unicorn Horn, the Imperial Treasury is unforgettable. Also in the huge Hofburg complex, the Sissi Museum offers a vivid insight into the life of the famous empress. The sublime Schönbrunn Palace, the summer residence of the Habsburgs, has nothing to envy the splendor of the Palace of Versailles.

In the evening, the Staatsoper is the setting for a rendezvous with Philip II, King of Spain, and his son Don Carlos. The Vienna State Opera is indeed the highlight of the new musical season with this new production of Verdi’s Don Carlos, directed by the prodigious Russian Kirill Serebrennikov. We are delighted to welcome back Philippe Jordan (former Music Director of the Paris Opera) at the head of an exceptional cast: Roberto Tagliavini, Joshua Guerrero, Asmik Grigorian and Eve-Maud Hubeaux.

For many, this is Verdi’s best opera. It is, in any case, the Italian composer’s longest work, and the one on which he worked the most. Over a period of almost twenty years, Verdi produced no fewer than seven versions, switching from French to Italian, sometimes completely recomposing certain scenes, until the famous five-act version, presented at the Paris Opéra. A magnificent condensed version in four acts was presented at La Scala in Milan in 1884. the heart of our Viennese evening. Verdi was so attached to this sublime story of love and politics because it sums up all his preoccupations – family, spiritual, political and sentimental. In Don Carlos, he imagines four exceptional roles: King Philip II, his son Don Carlos, Elisabeth de Valois and Princess Eboli. We can count on the overflowing imagination of the brilliant Russian director Kirill Serebrennikov (also a Cannes Festival favorite and a staunch opponent of Putin) to weave relevant echoes into our own time. The high-flying cast (Roberto Tagliavini, Joshua Guerrero, Asmik Grigorian and Eve-Maud Hubeaux) confirms the scope of this new production. With Philippe Jordan in the pit, this is one of the operatic events of the year.
