Berlin has a fascinating history. You can admire the mythical bust of Nefertiti at the Neues Museum or the archaeological wonders of Pergamon. With its richly ornate interiors, Charlottenburg Palace is a Baroque splendour, as is the Brandenburg Gate, erected at the end of the eighteenth century, which opens the Unter den Linden avenue. There are also so many places to visit for those who are passionate about the twentieth century: the Reichstag, the underground of the city or the remains of the Berlin Wall…

We invite you to a truly exceptional stay. The Deutsche Oper presents Wagner’s Ring Cycle in four consecutive evenings: Rheingoldgold, Die Walküre, Siegfried and Twilight of the Gods. This exciting experience, which must be done at least once in a lifetime, is offered in Stefan Herheim’s remarkable staging. The Berlin Opera has a long Wagnerian reputation under the baton of its director Donald Runnicles. In the manner of a “winter Bayreuth”, the singers gathered here (Derek Walton, Ricarda Merbeth, Clay Hilley…) are major interpreters of the German composer. What an experience! Wagner’s masterpiece performed in ideal conditions!

Winner of several international awards, Norwegian Stefan Herheim is one of today’s most important directors: in his work, he brilliantly mixes historical events with biographical elements from the lives of composers.  An eternal traveller, the German composer lived in exile for a long time and found only in music (the Bayreuth Theatre being the most eloquent example) a permanent home. Based on this metaphor, which he extends to the current geopolitical situation, Herheim paints a stunningly rich picture: over the course of the four evenings, a community emerges, which will occupy, right down to the foyer, the entire space of the Deutsche Oper.

Director of the Berlin institution since 2007, conductor Donald Runnicles promises a musical reading that is as ardent as it is committed. Long live Wagner’s music!

Rhinegold and Die Walküre are the only operas of the Ring to have been premiered before the opening of the Bayreuth Festival in 1876. If Rheingold Gold is only a “prologue” strictly speaking, Wagner’s writing evolves in this first part: we leave the strict world of the Gods to enter the universe of men. Here, tragic and incestuous love shakes up passions.

It is perhaps in Die Walküre that we find the most beautiful vocal cast of this Berlin Ring: Michael König, Tobias Kehrer, Derek Walton, Elisabeth Teige, Ricarda Merbeth… All of them are immense Wagnerian singers, seasoned with the extreme demands of the score.

Siegfried’s genesis was extremely complex. The composition began in 1856, but following difficulties in his personal life (in the meantime he had written Tristan und Isolde), Wagner allowed seven years to pass to complete the opera. The evolution of the musical language is considerable: the libretto multiplies intimate scenes with two characters, carried by the flow of an orchestra of cosmic dimensions.

Siegfried premiered on 16 August 1876, during the very first Bayreuth Festival. Among the main roles, we find of course Clay Hilley‘s Siegfried and Elisabeth Teige‘s Brünnhilde.

The culmination of The Ring Twilight, Twilight of the Gods had at least three different endings. Wagner seems to have hesitated as to the philosophical meaning to be given to the conclusion of his Ring, depending on whether it was an extension of a Buddhist or Schöpenhauerian philosophy. Premiered on August 17, 1876, Twilight of the Gods shows all the means seen and heard in the three previous installments at their peaks. There is no doubt that the team formed by conductor Donald Runnicles and director Stefan Herheim deploys a form of dramatic and musical accomplishment in this latest opus. Among the singers of this final day, we find Clay Hilley (Siegfried), Ricarda Merbeth (Brünnhilde), Annika Schlicht (Waltraute), Jordan Shanahan (Alberich)…
