July is the ideal month to visit Munich: the pleasant temperatures invite you to stroll and explore. Nothing is more delightful than walking through the sublime English Garden or the Olympic Park in summer. Nymphenburg Castle offers a real trip back to the Baroque age, with its richly decorated galleries and exotic cabinets. Beyond the city limits, why not do a trip to the enchanting and mythical Neuschwanstein Castle?

The Bavarian Opera is one of the best operas in the world. More than ever, the Munich institution seduces with its world-class shows and exceptional musicians. In Martin Kusej’s staging, Macbeth by Verdi is a jewel in which the extraordinary couple Ludovic Tézier and Anastasia Bartoli shine. In Tchaikovsky’s Queen of Spades, Asmik Grigorian is just as exceptional, while Tobias Kratzer completes his Ring in 2027 with Götterdämmerung that is destined to inter the Wagnerian legend. An ideal stay!

When it premiered in 2008, Martin Kusej’s staging shocked with its violence and expressionist images. Since then, this avant-garde show has become one of the classics of Bavarian opera, as its dramaturgy marries the supernatural dimension of Verdi’s inspiration. Here the Macbeths are indeed the dangerous usurpers of the throne of Scotland in Shakespeare’s play, except that the whole of reality here is adorned with strangeness. As Macbeth, Ludovic Tézier has shown that he is the greatest Verdi singer of our time, while as Lady Macbeth, Anastasia Bartoli (no relation to the Roman mezzo) will appear to some as a lyrical revelation. With her declamatory sense, singing technique and powerful breath, the Florentine soprano burns the stage in this role. Marco Armiliato is the ideal conductor to deploy the very particular musicality of Verdi’s writing.

The Queen of Spades is Tchaikovsky’s penultimate opera and one of his supreme successes. Based on Pushkin’s novel namesake, the book tells the story of Hermann, a German officer fascinated by gambling who uses the young Lisa to get in touch with a wealthy Countess. In this masterpiece, the fantastic arises with the appearance of playing cards, triggering the tragic fate of the protagonists. Received by the press, the direction by the Australian Benedict Andrews plays the codes of black film and deploys a cinematographic scale. As Hermann, the Russian Ivan Gyngazov is absolutely idiomatic, while Asmik Gregorian as Lisa brings a dramatic thrill. Light of timbre, splendour of vocal conduct, incandescent stage temperament, the Lithuanian soprano is a lyrical phenomenon like only one per generation. Speechless!

All opera houses want to create their own Ring, but few succeed in their Wagnerian cycle. With Tobias Kratzer (who is also director in Hamburg), the Munich Opera seems to have achieved the unexpected squaring of the cycle. From the first part of Das Rheingold, the international press had praised the extreme intelligence and plastic beauty of the staging. Here the quality of the actor’s work is combined with a polysemic theatrical richness of the best quality. The apotheosis of the Ring cycle, Götterdämmerung is now the great Wagnerian event of the season. There is no doubt that Kratzer retains his extraordinary inspiration, especially since he keeps his partner in the pit, the prodigious conductor and music director of the Munich Opera Vladimir Jurowski. The vocal team composed by Benjamin Bruns, Georg Nigl and Miina-Liisa Värelä called on the most Wagnerian singers.
