You will succumb to the temptation of Verona. Too often overshadowed by its Venetian rival, the medieval city dazzles with its singular charm. All in gold and pink marble, Verona boasts an exceptional architectural heritage. Of course, you will want to visit the Casa di Giuletta and its famous balcony, which is said to have inspired the very first story of the Shakespearean lovers. But the city has other treasures too, such as the Lamberti Tower, Castel san Pietro and the Piazza dei Signori, where a statue of Dante is enthroned. As if in a dream, stroll along the banks of the Adige to cross the Ponte Pietra.

As usual, the 2025 edition is devoted mainly to the Italian repertoire. Among the highlights: a brand new production of Nabucco, one of Giuseppe Verdi’s most powerful masterpieces, which promises a striking staging and where the famous soprano Anna Netrebko will play the intense and dramatic role of Abigaille, promising an unforgettable performance; the classic La Traviata, whose beauty and emotion continue to captivate hearts; and a sumptuous ballet that will enhance this unique setting under a starry sky. Vibrant with history and magic, Verona’s Roman amphitheatre offers an incomparable setting for unforgettable cultural evenings.

WEDNESDAY, 23 JULY – VERONA

Arrival at leisure in Verona.

At 9:30pm, at the Verona Arena:

ROBERTO BOLLE

N.N. : Choreographer

Roberto Bolle : Leading dancer

Roberto Bolle is one of the legends of ballet. At the age of twelve, he entered the Ballet School of La Scala in Milan. Rudolf Nureyev spotted his talent straight away, and it was at just 21 that he was appointed primo ballerino at La Scala. By his own admission, his favourite role was Romeo, which he performed with virtuosity, spontaneity and enthusiasm. So it’s only natural that Roberto Bollé should feel so at home in Shakespeare’s city of lovers! In the sumptuous setting of Verona’s Arena, the dancer and choreographer presents a new show, in the company of his friends from the best companies in the world. A real treat!

THURSAY, 24 JULY – VERONA

This is THE event of the 2025 edition. Of course, there are the immense singers Amartuvshin Enkhbat in the title role and Anna Netrebko as Abigaille, as well as Pinchas Steinberg’s expert conducting in the orchestra pit. But this new production also promises much because of Stefano Poda‘s direction. The brilliant Italian theatre-maker has already pulled off an extraordinary Aida in Verona, and we can count on him to revolutionise Verdi’s early masterpiece. Poda declares: ‘The Arena in Verona is the most extraordinary open-air theatre (…) On stage, my interpretation of the work will aim to create a Nabucco unlike any other that can exist in the Arena: not a work of theatre, nor a simple opera event, but a festival event, total art, that can speak to lovers of the genre as much as to a much wider audience’. After an Aïda made of crystal and lasers in 2023, Nabucco has plenty of surprises in store!

When Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata premiered at the Teatro La Fenice on 6 March 1853, Venetian audiences were stunned. For the first time, a tragic opera plot was based on a contemporary story with a character on the fringes of society: the Parisian courtesan Violetta Valéry. The opera was thus deeply rooted in the social environment of its time, while offering psychological portraits of rare finesse. In Hugo de Ana’s beautiful production, the plot is transposed to the late nineteenth century in an atmosphere ‘à la Sarah Bernhardt’. In magnificent sets tinged with Japanese influences, the implacable destiny of La Traviata embraces and overwhelms us. And because Verdi’s opera lends itself ideally to the magic of the Verona Arena, and the audience vibrates to the intoxicating sway of the music like a single soul, the show is an absolute must-see.
