Milan Milan has a magnificently rich history. The impressive Sforza Castle bears witness to the medieval age of the Lombard city. The prestigious collections of the Pinacoteca di Brera (one of Italy’s finest museums) are packed with masterpieces by Renaissance masters. The Poldi Pezzoli Museum is a nineteenth-century dream, while there are countless Liberty buildings from the Italian Art Nouveau movement. For lovers of contemporary architecture, don’t miss a visit to the stunning Porta Nuova district, with its futuristic buildings and hanging gardens.

Our visit will also be a fantastic journey back in time. First of all, a recital by Asmik Grigorian will take us to the Germany of Richard Strauss; then Donizetti’s irresistible Fille du régiment (directed by the brilliant Laurent Pelly) will transport us to the Paris belcanto, when Riccardo Chailly will conduct a magnificent programme from the Viennese Secession

    FRIDAY, OCTOBER 17, 2025 – MILAN

THE DAUGHTER OF THE REGIMENT, by G. Donizetti

    Pierre Doyen : Hortensius

Barbara Frittoli : The Duchess of Crakentorp

La Fille du Régiment was Donizetti’s first work to be written in French. Premiered in 1840 at the Opéra-Comique, the work is a marvel of fantasy that directly prefigures Offenbach. In this subtle blend of bravura arias and tender romances, the composer paints a delicious portrait of Marie, played here by the formidable Julie Fuchs. The French soprano (with an irresistible stage presence) will be joined by her excellent compatriot Géraldine Chauvet in the role of the Countess. In the role of Tonio, Juan Diego Flórez is quite simply one of the finest singers in this repertoire. As for the staging, we can count on Laurent Pelly to deliver a show full of verve and humour.

Before becoming Music Director of La Scala (since 2017), Riccardo Chailly was (between 1985 and 2004) conductor of the prestigious Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra. While he is an immense interpreter of the operatic repertoire, the Italian musician is also a superb symphonic conductor. This programme takes us back to 1900 Vienna, when Schönberg and Berg revolutionised music. The highlight of this splendid concert is the moving Rückert Lieder (an important milestone in Mahler’s work), sung by the great mezzo Elīna Garanča.

    Pieces by Richard Strauss

    Detailed programme not yet annouced

She is one of the great singers of our time. With her voice of unprecedented range, Asmik Grigorian takes on the most demanding roles in the repertoire. Performing on the world’s greatest stages, the Lithuanian soprano also possesses a dramatic temperament that nowhere shines through better than in Strauss’s heroines, such as Salome and Chrysothemis. But in this Milan recital, the singer offers us a more intimate side of her art, as she performs with pianist Hyung-Ki Joo in songs by Richard Strauss. The German composer was enamoured of the female voice (his wife Pauline was a soprano), and his pen reserved for him pages of overwhelming beauty.
