Maria Callas would have been 100 years old on December 2, 2023. A magnetic singer and moving tragedian, the Greek singer revolutionized the art of opera. Come and experience with us an exceptional anniversary day to celebrate the genius of one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century.

To celebrate Maria Callas, Paris was the ideal city. If Italy welcomed her first triumphs, it was France that welcomed her with love during the last part of her life. The singer performed three times at the Palais Garnier: at a legendary Gala of the Legion of Honour in 1958, in Norma in 1964 under the baton of Georges Prêtre and in the famous staging of Franco Zeffirelli’s Tosca. But Paris is also the city where Maria Callas used to stay, notably at the Ritz Hotel (where a luxurious suite now bears her name) and then in her own apartment located on the 3rd floor of 36 Avenue Georges-Mandel in the sixteenth arrondissement.

We invite you to follow in the footsteps of the singer in the capital for a whole day.

    Satruday, December 2, 2023 - PARIS

Lunch at Maxim’s Restaurant, one of Maria Callas’ favorite establishments. It was in this emblematic restaurant, a marvel of art nouveau, that the singer liked to dine after her concerts. The management of the establishment was not mistaken since the singer was one of the exceptional guests to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Maxim’s in 1968.

After lunch, we’ll then head to one of the lounges of the Ritz Hotel, one of the other highlights of La Callas’ Parisian life. In the company of your lecturer, a specialist in the Greek singer, you will learn more about the life and art of a singer with an extraordinary destiny before enjoying the unmissable French tea-time by François Perret.

At 7:30 p.m., at the Opéra Garnier:

    GALA MARIA CALLAS

    Paris Opera Orchestra

    Eun-Sun Kim: Conductor

    Robert Carsen: Director

    Sondra Radvanovsky: Soprano

Under the direction of conductor Eun-Sun Kim, Music Director of the San Francisco Opera, the Opera Orchestra joins forces with renowned director Robert Carsen for a staged concert. In the title role of this exceptional evening, Sondra Radvanovsky stands out as the natural heir to Maria Callas. From her elder sister, the Canadian soprano shares the repertoire (with a particular predilection for nineteenth-century Italian bel canto), the stage commitment (like Callas, Radvanovsky burns the boards!), the audience of enthusiasts (some lovers of her voice have signed a petition to demand her presence at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the only season in which the singer was absent!) and the voice with an incomparable timbre. One hundred years after her birth, Maria Callas’ legacy burns with wonderful intensity.
