We’ll take the pulse of the Italian metropolis on Via Toledo, the city’s main shopping street. Called “Spaccanapoli”, the historic center of Naples is an enchanting maze of alleys and baroque churches. To find peace and quiet, the magnificent cloister of Santa Chiara is an authentic haven of peace, and if you want to take to the skies, the Carthusian Monastery of San Martino promises a unique view of Vesuvius and the sublime Bay of Naples.

Inaugurated in 1737, the Teatro San Carlo is a theatre that every music lover must have been to at least once in their life. Admittedly, it is one of the oldest opera houses in the world, but its activity is abundant under the direction of the Frenchman Dominique Meyer! We invite you to a new production of Puccini’s opera Turandot, directed by Vasily Barkhatov and led by the San Carlo’s musical conductor, Dan Ettinger. In the title roles, Yusif Eyvazov and Rosa Feola are excellent Calaf and Timur. As for the role of the Chinese Empress, soprano Sondra Radvanovsky follows in the footsteps of La Callas with astonishing brilliance. An impressive operatic evening in perspective!

Qu’on se le dise, Naples est une ville trépidante !

At 8 p.m., at the Teatro San Carlo:

    TURANDOT, by G. Puccini

    Dan Ettinger: Conductor

    Vasily Barkhatov: Director

    Sondra Radvanovsky: Princess Turandot

    Nicolas Martinucci: Altoum

    Aleksandr Tsymbaliuk: Timur

    Yusif Eyvazov: Calaf

    Rosa Feola: Liù

Premiered in 1926, Turandot was Puccini’s last opera. Although the Italian composer was unable to complete the final scene, the work stood out for its musical grandeur and theatrical splendour. The story takes place at the imperial court of China: a terrible princess presents three riddles to her suitors. Initially rebellious, Calaf falls under the spell of this frightening queen, but this passion will lead to the death of the slave Liu, who is secretly in love with him…

To open the 2023/2024 season of the Teatro San Carlo, Turandot is the ideal work. The Russian director Vasily Barkhatov, who is very active in Germany, promises a new reading full of rhinestones. Conducting the excellent orchestra of the Neapolitan theatre, Dan Ettinger is a renowned interpreter of Puccini. And at the Teatro San Carlo, the vocal cast is top-notch: Yusif Eyvazov as Calaf, Rosa Feola as Liu (a role she has already performed in Zürich and La Scala in Milan) and Nicola Martinucci, a legendary singer of the Italian repertoire during the 1970s, in the small role of Altoum.  After recording it, soprano Sondra Radvanovsky continues her exploration of the role of Turandot. Although the Canadian singer played Mimi in La Bohème at the age of 21, she had the patience to reach her full maturity to perform this demanding role. The Radvanovsky is now fully up against the legends Maria Callas and Joan Sutherland!
