Life is so pleasant in Baden-Baden. One cannot resist recalling the words of former U.S. President Bill Clinton during an official visit: “Baden-Baden is so nice that you have to name it twice”. Steeped in history, the town charms visitors with its beautifully preserved historic center; offers moments of indulgence at its world-famous Casino and the Caracalla Thermal Baths; invites relaxation amid the lush floral paradise of the Lichtentaler Allee and celebrates music in the prestigious setting of the Festspielhaus.
For its 2027 edition, the Baden-Baden Easter Festival naturally commemorates the 200th anniversary of Beethoven’s death. At the helm of the outstanding Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Joanna Mallwitz (music director of Berlin’s legendary Konzerthaus since 2023) conducts the rarely performed Choral Fantasy, a work that foreshadows Symphony No. 9, as well as a new production of the composer’s only opera, Fidelio, staged by Krzysztof Warlikowski. Under the baton of Klaus Mäkelä, the magnificent Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam will also perform Beethoven’s exhilarating Symphony No. 7. As a prelude to this exceptional evening, France’s celebrated violinist Renaud Capuçon will perform Sibelius’s violin concerto. An extraordinary program!
