Vienna holds countless treasures. At every street corner, the past reemerges in a kind of dazzling revelation. Of course, one must visit the Hofburg Palace, residence of the Habsburg dynasty for nearly seven centuries. Equally sumptuous, the Belvedere Palace is one of the most beautiful Baroque castles in the world, with its unforgettable collection of Klimt paintings. Yet one of the most striking experiences in the Austrian capital may well be the Postsparkasse, an astonishing building designed by the architect Otto Wagner, which transports us straight back to the very beginning of the twentieth century, so much does this Art Nouveau gem appear as a total work of art!

Our stay shows three great masterpieces of opera. Adriana Lecouvreur is a remarkable play within a play, performed here by the incomparable duo of Ermonela Jaho and Elīna Garanča. In Barrie Kosky’s staging, Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro regains its youthful spirit and wonderful exuberance. Finally, Verdi’s masterpiece Don Carlo is presented through the highly contemporary vision of the renowned filmmaker Kirill Serebrennikov. A splendid and richly varied program!

The Marriage of Figaro never ceases to astonish with its liveliness. With librettist Lorenzo da Ponte, Mozart weaves a dazzlingly fast-paced plot in which the action never stops, constantly renewed through superb duets and vocal ensembles. This Vienna State Opera production benefits from the sparkling staging of Barrie Kosky, who does not hesitate to emphasize the vaudevillian aspect of the action and the social dimension of this opera—created, let us remember, just a few months before the French Revolution. For the revival of this production, acclaimed by the international press, the Viennese institution calls upon one of the rising talents of the new generation of conductors, the Austrian Patrick Hahn. Alongside Riccardo Fassi’s Figaro, the cast also features two outstanding French singers: Florian Sempey and Elsa Dreisig in the roles of Count and Countess Almaviva.

For many, it is Verdi’s greatest opera. It is, in any case, the longest work by the Italian composer and the one to which he devoted the most effort. Over nearly twenty years, Verdi produced no fewer than seven versions, moving from French to Italian, sometimes entirely recomposing certain scenes, until arriving at the famous five-act version presented at the Paris Opera. A magnificent condensed four-act version was presented at La Scala in Milan in 1884: it is this version that forms the core of our Viennese evening. If Verdi was so deeply attached to this sublime story of love and politics, it is because it encapsulates all his concerns—familial, spiritual, political, and emotional. In his staging, the Russian Kirill Serebrennikov (also an acclaimed filmmaker at the Cannes Film Festival and a staunch opponent of Putin) offers a brilliant contemporary reflection, with striking echoes of our immediate present. The outstanding cast—featuring in the leading roles Günther Groissböck as Philip II, Vittorio Grigolo as Don Carlo, the remarkable Québécois baritone Etienne Dupuis as Posa, and the fiery Eve-Maud Hubeaux as Eboli—confirms the current excellence of the Vienna State Opera.

Adriana Lecouvreur is one of the jewels of early twentieth-century Italian opera. Dare we place it on the same level as the works of Puccini? It is also the masterpiece of Francesco Cilea (1866–1950), telling the story of the rivalry between a famous tragic actress of the Age of Enlightenment and a duchess, both in love with the same man. Adriana’s death is highly romantic: she dies after breathing in a bouquet of poisoned flowers. For this verismo gem, stage director David McVicar offers a dazzling visual mise en abyme, thanks to striking plays on perspective. Supported by the Italian maestro Marco Armiliato, the confrontation between the two heroines promises to be nothing short of titanic, with two great singers of contrasting temperaments—like fire and ice: on the one hand, the extraordinary dramatic intensity of Ermonela Jaho in the role of Adriana Lecouvreur; on the other, the supreme refinement of the great Latvian mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča as the Duchess of Bouillon.
