Aigul Akhmetshina and Vasilisa Berzhanskaya share the title role in Damiano Michieletto’s scorching new production of Bizet’s ever-popular opera.

Bizet derived the plot of Carmen from the popular novel of the same name by French writer Prosper Mérimée, which claimed to be based on a true story. Although it received a lukewarm reception from press and public alike at its premiere – perhaps due to its heady mix of passion, sensuality and violence – the opera quickly became immensely popular and remains an enduring favorite today. In fact, Carmen is the second most performed opera in the Royal Opera repertoire, with over 500 performances.
