Some cities come into their own in winter, and Edinburgh is undoubtedly one of them. As the days grow shorter, the fading light catches the stone façades and fires are lit once more, the Scottish capital reveals an irresistible charm. From the medieval closes of the Old Town to the graceful Georgian streets of the New Town, beneath the imposing silhouette of Edinburgh Castle, the city offers an almost theatrical setting. In late December, this atmosphere becomes more enchanting still, as Edinburgh prepares for Hogmanay, the Scottish New Year celebrations, whose extraordinary spirit has earned them a place among the world’s most celebrated festivities.
For this three-night escape, we have chosen The Balmoral, one of Edinburgh’s most distinguished hotels, whose iconic clock tower has presided over Princes Street since 1902. More than simply a place to stay, this grand Scottish institution will be at the heart of your experience, offering a delightful introduction to the country’s traditions and pleasures. Savour the timeless ritual of Afternoon Tea beneath the Venetian chandelier of Palm Court, or discover the subtleties of Scotland’s finest whiskies during a tasting at the Scotch Bar, guided by an expert ambassador who will reveal their origins, aromas and distinctive character. These cherished traditions offer the perfect invitation to slow down, embrace the warmth of Scottish hospitality and enjoy the pleasures of winter.
On 31 December, an optional morning excursion will reveal the historic heart of Edinburgh, before an afternoon at leisure to explore the city, enjoy the hotel’s facilities or prepare for the evening’s celebrations. Champagne, a magnificent gala dinner, live Scottish music and traditional dancing will set the scene for the final hours of the year. As midnight approaches, anticipation will build towards an unforgettable moment: fireworks illuminating Edinburgh Castle, accompanied by the familiar strains of Auld Lang Syne and the stirring sound of bagpipes. Few settings could offer a more memorable welcome to the New Year.
The following morning invites a gentler pace. Begin 2027 with a leisurely breakfast, followed by an optional stroll through the elegant Georgian streets of the New Town and onwards to Dean Village, nestled beside the Water of Leith. An opportunity to linger a little longer in the magic of Hogmanay and discover the tradition of First Footing, according to which the first person to cross the threshold of a home after midnight is believed to bring good fortune for the year ahead.
