You will lead the life of a prince in Venice. In St. Mark’s Square, the Doge’s Palace is one of the architectural wonders of the world with its frescoes by Veronese and Tintoretto. Among the treasures of the Serenissima, La Ca’ d’Oro (the “Golden House”) is one of the most dazzling palaces in the city. Equally noteworthy is the Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo, which stands out for its famous spiral staircase. As for the superb Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, it houses a magnificent collection of modern art.

At the Teatro della Fenice, a temple of the operatic repertoire if ever there was one, you will enjoy a performance of Turandot, on the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of Puccini’s death. The terrible Empress of China will be played by the fascinating Uruguayan soprano Maria José Siri, while Fabio Sartori paints a sensitive portrait of Kalaf’s character. Praised by the Italian press, Cecilia Ligero‘s staging is a visual splendour.

Like Mozart’s Requiem, Turandot is one of the most mythical unfinished works in the repertoire. 2024 will see the hundredth anniversary of Puccini’s death, because while the Italian composer was unable to complete the final scene entirely, his last opera Turandot had a famous posthumous premiere.

It is April 25, 1926 at La Scala in Milan. The legendary conductor Arturo Toscanini leads the performance until the middle of the third act, when he turns to the audience and says, “The performance ends here, since this is where the Master died”. Since then, first Franco Alfano and then Luciano Berio have reconstructed the last scene that was missing, and almost a century later, Turandot has established itself as one of the major operas of the Italian repertoire, with its sumptuous orchestration and arias as famous as “E lucevan le stelle”.

In the setting of La Fenice, Cecilia Ligero‘s staging was praised for its plastic beauty and dramatic force. Far from being just a cold and distant princess, Turandot appears as the authentic tragic character of the story. In this role with overwhelming demands, the Uruguayan Maria José Siri sets the stage ablaze. Under the direction of Francesco Ivan Ciampa, Fabio Sartori and Selene Zanetti form the most moving of the Kalaf-Liu couple.
