A few years ago, the inhabitants decided to revive the ancient ksar of Tizkmoudine, which had been abandoned for half a century. As you wander through the narrow streets, you can explore the vestiges of the past: old bourgeois residences, a historic mosque, a small museum and a creative arts centre where the village children carry on the traditions. Each open door reveals a piece of local history.
In the village square, you can sample bread fresh from traditional ovens before sharing a cup of mint tea with the women of the weaving cooperative, guardians of ancestral skills passed down from generation to generation.

Surrounded by mountains at the bottom of the Awju Valley, the Red House is not within reach of the disoriented tourist. From the village of Tizkmoudine, it takes an hour and a half by car to reach it. It’s a fabulous journey through the foothills of the Anti-Atlas Mountains to the hot spring at the heart of the old part of the village, where the building stands. Where trees are scarce, the rock plays with the sun, taking on a palette ranging from black to bright orange.

Head south for a Saharan adventure. Two hours’ drive from La Maison Rouge, near the Algerian border, the town of Fam el-Hisn marks the entrance to the great ergs. It is here, at the foot of a magnificent acacia tree, that your team has set up three khaïmas, traditional Mauritanian tents.
With their travel trunks and soft cushions, these tents offer unexpected comfort in the middle of the desert. Camp de l’Acacia revisits nomadic life with refinement, without losing any of its authenticity.
The pace slows down even further. The notion of time dissolves in the immensity of the dunes. The surrounding area is home to 12,000-year-old rock paintings, traces of the first humans to pass through the region. At the end of the day, climb to the top of a large dune to watch the sunset, then return to camp where dinner awaits you around the fire.

Two Berber-inspired villas celebrate traditional craftsmanship: delicate mashrabiya screens, silky fabrics, carved stools and cream-coloured chaise longues create an atmosphere that blends the Orient and Africa. Here, everyone sets their own pace: savour the intimacy of a rammed earth house topped with a Bedouin tent, or set off with a guide into the palm grove, on foot or by bike.
When evening falls, Sufi songs ring out, performed by musicians who carry on the legacy of the caravans of Guelmim, once a crossroads for the gold and spice routes.
