What if Hamburg’s time had finally come? For a long time, the Hanseatic capital remained in the shadow of the German capital and its charms too little recognised in Europe. Yet the city where Brahms was born boasts extraordinary beauty and a quality of life that is, dare we say it, far superior to that of its Berlin rival. Its districts (St. Georg, Eppendorf, Rothenburg and the sultry Reeperbahn, where the Beatles made their first steps in the early 1960s) form the map of a fascinating city.

But in Hamburg, a city at the confluence of the Alster, Bille and Elbe rivers, it’s the port that sets the pulse of human activity, and the bustling warehouse district, known as Speicherstadt, is bursting with activity.

This weekend, you can attend the ballet Slow Burn at the legendary Hamburg Staatsoper and admire the work of famous choreographers Aszure Barton and William Forsyth.

SATURDAY 11 JANUARY, 2025 - HAMBURG

At 7.30pm at the Hamburg Staatsoper:

SLOW BURN, ballet

Hamburg Staatsoper Philharmonic Orchestra

Aszure Barton: Choreography

William Forsyth: Choreography

Ambrose Akinmusire: Music

William Forsythe is undoubtedly one of the most important dance creators of our time. The reference point and defining feature of his Blake Works V (The Barre Project) is the eponymous ballet barre placed on stage, which simultaneously creates the illusion of infinity by extending far into the wings.

Forsythe’s choreography is a must-see for all lovers of classical ballet, as it combines the grace of form with the unbridled joy of dance.

Aszure Barton strives to create choreography that will bring more beauty to this world, but she does not shy away from heavy subject matter. With a score commissioned from jazz composer/improviser Ambrose Akinmusire, Barton has created a world premiere that is not afraid to flirt with perilous beauty.
