What a line-up! Hearing Renaud Capuçon perform Sibelius’s thrilling Violin Concerto is already an event in itself. But when the celebrated French violinist is joined by none other than Klaus Mäkelä conducting his Concertgebouw Orchestra, expectations rise exponentially. In the second half of the program, the Finnish conductor will showcase all the velvety richness of the legendary Dutch ensemble in Beethoven’s Dionysian Symphony No. 7, which Wagner described as the “apotheosis” of the dance. My first work is world-famous. Surrounded by countless legends and speculations, Mozart’s Requiem is one of the absolute myths in the history of music. My second work is a lesser-known gem. Despite its grand scale, Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy has long suffered by comparison with the Symphony No. 9, which it seems to foreshadow. Yet what originality there is in this work, which combines the characteristics of a piano concerto and a choral cantata, and above all, what magnificent sonorities! One can count on the unfailing commitment of the musicians of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and their conductor Joanna Mallwitz (the first woman to serve as Music Director of Berlin’s Konzerthaus) performing alongside pianist Alice Sara Ott and an outstanding vocal quartet, including the French mezzo-soprano Marina Viotti.

Among the new generation of musicians, Seong-Jin Cho is undoubtedly one of the brightest stars. In 2015, at the age of 20, the Korean pianist won First Prize at the prestigious International Chopin Competition in Warsaw. Since then, the former student of the Paris Conservatoire has continued to captivate audiences with his deeply poetic playing and his remarkable command of tonal colour. His program combines a contemporary work by Jörg Widmann, the grace of Mozart’s Fantasy, and the ferocity of two works by Prokofiev. While certain passages from the ballet Romeo and Juliet are universally famous, Sonata No. 8 remains surprisingly little known to the wider public. Yet it is the longest piano work composed by the Russian composer, whose first interpreters, Emil Gilels and Sviatoslav Richter, praised its complexity and richness.

At first glance, Fidelio appears to be a fairly typical “rescue opera”, a genre that was highly popular at the beginning of the 19^th century. Yet Beethoven gave its subject a deep personal significance. The story of the political prisoner Florestan, chained in darkness by the corrupt and vengeful governor Don Pizarro, and rescued at the last moment from a sordid and secret death by his heroic wife Leonore, has become a parable of political oppression and heroic idealism. Around this magnificent story, Beethoven created music of breathtaking intensity and transcendent humanism. To conduct this masterpiece, with its almost symphonic flow, Joanna Mallwitz will rely on the excellence of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. With Krzysztof Warlikowski’s staging, this promises to be a highly imaginative Fidelio, featuring outstanding direction of the singers, including Sean Panikkar (a celebrated tenor in the United States) as Fidelio and Vera-Lotte Boecker (named Singer of the Year by Opernwelt magazine in 2022) as Leonore.
