Welcome to Naples! This Italian city will dazzle you with its venomous charm. The bustle of its streets contrasts with the religious calm of its magnificent churches. Visit the Church of the Gesù Nuovo, a sublime example of Neapolitan Baroque, or the superb Cattedrale di San Gennaro. The Castel Sant’Elmo offers a splendid view of the city’s bay, certainly one of the most beautiful in the world. In the distance, you can make out the characteristic silhouette of Vesuvius: the most courageous (though the climb is the easiest) can take a walk around its smoking crater…

A trip to Naples would not be complete without a performance at the Teatro San Carlo. This legendary opera house (one of the oldest in Europe) bears witness to the splendor of the city in the 18th century. For this trip, we invite you to two fine shows: first, a recital of Russian melodies by the great soprano Asmik Grigorian, followed by a performance of Dvorak’s Rusalka, in a new staging by Dmitri Tcherniakov. Fascinating!

Asmik Grigorian is an extraordinary singer: her voice combines clarity and power with extraordinary refinement. She is also what we call a “stage beast”, capable of setting fire to the stages of the world’s greatest opera houses. Asmik Grigorian is also a marvellous recitalist: here, the Lithuanian soprano performs a program of Tchaikovski-Rachmaninov, with its Slavic romanticism. Her accompanist is nothing less than one of the finest soloists of our time. Winner of the Chopin Competition, Lithuanian pianist Lukas Geniušas is an admirable musician, who will weave the most beautiful of settings for his compatriot’s voice, while offering pages for solo piano of implacable poetry.

The eagerly-awaited Rusalka! Dvorak’s opera is always a delight: inspired by a fairy tale by Andersen, the work tells the story of an undine who chooses to live on the surface of the water to fulfill her love for a prince. We remember Robert Carsen’s enchanting production at the Opéra de Paris; here, Naples’ Théâtre San Carlo calls on another giant of today’s staging: Dmitri Tcherniakov. With the Russian artist, Rusalka is sure to take on ever-changing colors, Tcherniakov being as capable of stage magic as he is of plumbing the depths of the libretto’s psychoanalytical issues. The vocal cast is a veritable quartet of aces, as the female characters include four superstars: Ekaterina Gubanova, Maria Riccarda Wesseling, Anita Rachvelishvili and the flamboyant Asmik Grigorian in the title role.
