You’ll be living the life of a castle in Vienna. Splendor reigns everywhere in the Austrian capital, with beauty and history around every corner. The Hofburg, Schönbrunn Palace and Belvedere Palace are edifices that must be visited at least once in a lifetime. The collections in the Museumsquartier are absolutely unique in the world, with countless universal masterpieces of painting on display all year round. Overflowing with color, the Naschmarkt reminds us that in Vienna, we also eat divinely well, and that beauty is to be found here in every gesture of daily life.

Tonight, the Vienna Opera takes you to Rome’s Castel Sant’Angelo. A performance of Tosca is always a delight, so full is Puccini’s opera of passion and unforgettable arias. In the title roles, the Staatsoper’s cast features a dream couple: Aleksandra Kurzak and our beloved national Roberto Alagna.

The program
Tosca, by G. Puccini
May 17, 2024
SATURDAY, MAY 17, 2024 – VIENNA

At the end of the day, at the Wiener Staatsoper:

TOSCA, by G. Puccini

Marco Armiliato: Musical direction

Margarethe Wallmann: Stage direction

Aleksandra Kurzak: Floria Tosca

Roberto Alagna: Mario Cavaradossi

Gabriele Viviani: Baron Scarpia

For the Viennese, this is the ultimate production of Tosca. It may be the Staatsoper’s oldest staging (the premiere took place in 1958!), but the show, imagined by Margarethe Wallmann, has lost none of its magic. The passionate love story between Tosca and Cavaradossi (thwarted by the cruel Baron Scarpia) is brought to life in striking images. Puccini’s breathtaking opera (a veritable thriller avant la lettre!) gains in clarity and direction in this production, never more powerful than when embodied by great performers. This is certainly the case here with the pairing (on stage and off) of Aleksandra Kurzak as Tosca and Roberto Alagna as Cavaradossi. Under the affectionate baton of Marco Armiliato, the duo (to which Gabriele Viviani‘s Scarpia should be added) will set the stage of the Vienna Opera alight!
