Munich is full of wonders. The old Pinacoteca contains admirable paintings by Dürer, Brueghel and Rubens, while the new Pinacoteca shows the famous painting of Caspar David Friedrich, creating one of the most fabulous museums on Earth. The historic centre is perfectly preserved and expands its charms thanks to the Residenz and the impressive Marienplatz. To the west of the city, Nymphenburg Castle represents a trip back to the Baroque age.

For this spring stay, we invite you to see two great masterpieces of opera. Carmen by Bizet needs no introduction and the world still loves it. In this incredible Munich production, Benjamin Bernheim is the most upsetting of Don José. Tannhäuser by Wagner finds in Romeo Castellucci’s staging an essential reading of our time. The brilliant Italian director has Jonas Kaufmann as singer in one of his best roles, while Nathalie Stutzmann’s conducting gives this performance a special prestige.

“Toreador, take care of yourself!”. From the opening of Carmen, Georges Bizet plunges us into a blinding southern light, tinged by the tragic rumour of an arena of passion. Clarity of timbres, heady melodies, frenzied dances, the French composer creates the perfect opera, linking together some of the most famous lyrical arias in the repertoire. This is weird because Bizet has never been to Spain in his life. The beautiful gypsy is the main character in this story inspired by a story by Mérimée. However, it is also the figure of Don José, a lover spurned by Carmen, who is overwhelming here, when it is played by Benjamin Bernheim. It has often said that the Franco-Swiss tenor was the great successor of Roberto Alagna in French singing. In this beautiful production by Lina Wertmüller (who was the first female director in history to be nominated for an Oscar in Hollywood) and in sets by Enrico Job (who designed the sets for Francesco Rosi’s film adaptation of the opera in 1984), Bernheim once again follows in the legendary footsteps of his predecessor. The tenor brings all the light of his sumptuous voice and the humanity of his stage presence. Accompaigned by the Russian Maria Barakova as Carmen, and under the direction of Francesco Ivan Ciampa, Don José is indeed the undeniable event of this magnificent evening.

Tannhäuser is the most famous opera by the young Richard Wagner. He created it in Dresden in 1845. The work was revised many times until it caused a scandal at the Paris Opera in 1861. Among the worshippers of the Parisian public, there was Charles Baudelaire who saw in Tannhäuser “a fight of the flesh with the spirit, of hell with heaven, of Satan against God”. This is a story of the hero’s struggle between the carnal love of Venus and the chaste love of Elizabeth. It is difficult to imagine an opera more appropriate to the visionary genius of Romeo Castellucci, titan of contemporary staging, whose performances are full of dazzling visual images and striking symbols. For this revival, the vocal cast is composed of Jonas Kaufmann, imperial Wolfram von Eschenbach, accompanied by Elisabeth Teige, Elisabeth, and Ekaterina Gubanova, Venus. After triumphing at the Bayreuth Festival, conductor Nathalie Stuztmann once again demonstrates her absolute mastery of the Wagnerian universe.
