Munich is a fascinating combination of tradition and modernity. You can see businessmen in ties and happy partygoers in Lederhosen. Here there are ultramodern buildings, such as the impressive BMW Museum and the Treasury of the Residence, a veritable Ali Baba’s cave of ancient objects. You will also look the beauty of the city’s art galleries where masterpieces by Dürer, Bruegel or the famous paintings of Caspar David Friedrich are.

Every opera house needs its Ring. Wagner’s Ring cycle is extraordinary in that it mobilizes all the artistic forces of a theatre for the benefit of an epic. For the Munich Opera, staging the Ring is the most important as two of the four parts (Das Rheingold and Die Walküre) created in the Bavarian city. Since October 2025, its director Serge Dorny has entrusted the entire cycle to one of the most exciting directors of our time: Tobias Kratzer. The international press was not mistaken in unanimously praising the intelligence and relevance of the German playwright, as well as the conducting of conductor Vladimir Jurowski. Is the Munich Opera in the process of achieving what few opera houses achieve, namely an exceptional Ring? Out stay presents the entire Wagnerian cycle in four shows over a week.

THE RING BY RICHARD WAGNER

Wagner’s Ring is a monolith in the history of music. This fabulous epic in four parts occupied nearly 20 years of Wagner’s life. For about 15 hours (divided into 4 evenings), the German composer draws on the sources of Germanic mythology to create an art show, a miraculous fusion between theatre and music. While the last two parts (Siegfried and Götterdämmerung) were premiered at the Bayreuth Theatre, which was built for them, the first two (Das Rheingold and Die Walküre) had their premieres in Munich in 1869 and 1870 respectively. Like Bayreuth, Munich is the second Wagnerian stronghold.

Of the four works that make up The Ring, Das Rheingold is certainly the one that comes closest to a fairy tale. Here we enter the world of Gods and Germanic myths. Composed in 1854, the style of this opera has nothing in common with that of Götterdämmerung, written 20 years later. Everybody has high expectations on Tobias Kratzer, after his acclaimed Tannhäuser at the Bayreuth Festival. At the end of 2025, the German staging did not disappoint expectations by directing Das Rheingold of prodigious narrative speed, combined with reflection on the sacred and the loss of ideals. “God is dead” Alberich wrote on the wall of a ruined church before the Gods return to their altars to turn into statues at the end of the opera. The current music director Vladimir Jurowski also had the difficult task of succeeding his predecessor, Kirill Petrenko. Like Kratzer, the conductor seduces by the alacrity of the conduct of the musical discourse and the dramatic breadth helped by Nicholas Brownlee, Wotan, Ekaterina Gubanova, Fricka and Wiebke Lehmkuhl, Erda.

Das Rheingold and Die Walküre are the only operas of The Ring to have premiered before the opening of the Bayreuth Festival in 1876. From this first instalment (Das Rheingold being only a “prologue”), Wagner’s writing begins to evolve: we leave the strict world of the Gods and enter the universe of humans. Here tragic and incestuous love stirs passions. Among the great moments of the score, we can count on the majestic Wotan of Nicholas Brownlee, the moving Brünnhilde of Miina-Liisa Värelä in the moving scene of Wotan’s farewell to his daughter followed by the Incantation of Fire. Premiered in June 2026, Tobias Kratzer’s staging finds an ideal partner in Jurowski conducting.

The third instalment of The Ring, Siegfried, constitutes the absolute centre of the saga. In fact, it was with the writing of this libretto that everything began for Wagner in 1848. Musically, the Forging Song and the Forest Murmurs are the most beautiful moments of the Ring cycle. Yet the work had an extremely complex genesis. Composition began in 1856, but due to difficulties in his personal life (during which he also wrote Tristan und Isolde), Wagner waited 7 years to complete the opera. The evolution of the musical language is considerable: the libretto multiplies intimate scenes with two characters, carried by the flow of an orchestra of cosmic dimensions. Siegfried was premiered on 16 August 1876, during the very first Bayreuth Festival.

All opera houses want to create their own Ring, but few succeed in their Wagnerian cycle. With Tobias Kratzer (who is also director in Hamburg), the Munich Opera seems to have achieved the unexpected squaring of the cycle. From the first part of Das Rheingold, the international press had praised the extreme intelligence and plastic beauty of the staging. Here the quality of the actor’s work is combined with a polysemic theatrical richness of the best quality. The apotheosis of the Ring cycle, Götterdämmerung is now the great Wagnerian event of the season. There is no doubt that Kratzer retains his extraordinary inspiration, especially since he keeps his partner in the pit, the prodigious conductor and music director of the Munich Opera Vladimir Jurowski. The vocal team composed by Benjamin Bruns, Georg Nigl and Miina-Liisa Värelä called on the most Wagnerian singers.
