Programme: – S. Rachmaninov: Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini – S. Rachmaninov: Symphony No. 2

Few works are as instantly appealing to the ear as Rachmaninov’s Symphony No. 2. Premiered in 1908, the piece overflows with unforgettable melodies, reaching its peak in a slow movement awash with tenderness. One can rely on the artistry of Yannick Nézet-Séguin, at the helm of the splendid London Symphony Orchestra, to set this carousel of Slavic emotions ablaze. Written in 1934, the Russian composer’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini is inspired by the 24^th Caprice of the famous nineteenth-century Italian violinist. Beautifully structured, the work introduces the theme right from the opening (in the strings with the piano), before weaving in allusions to the Dies Irae and building to a dazzling finale. Made famous by the cinema, Variation No. 18 is particularly radiant and lyrical. The young Italian pianist Beatrice Rana takes hold of this breathtaking masterpiece.

The British conductor Antonio Pappano is one of the most versatile maestros in the world. Now Music Director of the legendary London Symphony Orchestra, Pappano for many years, divided his time between the Orchestra of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome and the leadership of London’s Royal Opera House. This remarkable versatility is reflected in a program that blends symphonic and operatic repertoire. In the first half, Norwegian violinist Vilde Frang performs Beethoven’s only Violin Concerto, while in the second half Pappano presents the stratospheric Act III of Tristan and Isolde. Richard Wagner adored Baden-Baden: it was in fact in this city that the German composer originally wished to establish his personal festival, which was ultimately founded in Bayreuth thanks to King Ludwig II of Bavaria. Conducted by Pappano, the Americans Clay Hilley (a Festspielhaus regular) and Sarah Jakubiak form the deeply moving couple of this medieval legend.
