Experience a gentle summer evening in Provence. Life is good in Orange, a charming southern town rich in exceptional heritage. Rising 35 meters high, the Ancient Theatre unfolds all its magic with a magnificent 103-meter-long stage wall. It is within this truly extraordinary setting that the famous Chorégies have taken place since 1869. But the Ancient Theatre is not the only asset to this truly remarkable town. Admirably preserved, the Triumphal Arch stands as a superb testament to Roman grandeur, while the historic centre reveals its narrow streets and shaded squares – just as one imagines them in the South of France. And in Orange, good food is a way of life, thanks to excellent local specialities and the delicious products found in its markets. A few kilometres away, the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape will delight the palates of all wine lovers.

For the 2026 edition, the Chorégies d’Orange presents a staged version of La Traviata, Verdi’s deeply moving masterpiece. The vocal cast is worthy of the world’s greatest stages: tenor Javier Camarena, baritone Ludovic Tézier, and Nadine Sierra, whom Opéra Magazine describes quite simply as ‘the finest Traviata performing today’.

Built in the 1st century BC under the reign of Augustus, the Ancient Theatre is the best preserved in Europe. Able to accommodate several thousand spectators, the venue offers remarkable acoustics and radiates an exceptional charm. Then comes the work itself. When La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi premiered at the Teatro La Fenice on 6 March 1853, the Venetian audience was astonished. For the first time, the plot of a tragic opera was based on a contemporary story featuring a character on the margins of society: the Parisian courtesan Violetta Valéry. The opera thus became deeply rooted in the social environment of its time, while offering psychological portraits of rare subtlety. The mythical numbers of this masterpiece are countless: the duet between Violetta and Germont, Alfredo’s aria, and, of course, the heartbreaking final scene. For this version at the Chorégies d’Orange, one must also praise the unforgettable musical cast. Under the baton of Italian conductor Paolo Arrivabeni, leading the Marseille Philharmonic Orchestra, the evening brings together two great Verdian singers: the Mexican tenor Javier Camarena and our national star (and Provence-born) Ludovic Tézier. As Traviata, Nadine Sierra recalls the greatest performers in history. In the title role, the American soprano masters the coloratura passages of the first act, the lyrical outbursts of the second, and the dramatic power of the third. Truly moving!
