Milan is full of secrets. Sure, the marble facade of the Duomo is amazing (especially when you see it after walking through the gorgeous Vittorio Emanuele II Gallery), but have you heard of the San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore church? With its paintings and mosaics inside, some say it’s basically Milan’s version of the Sistine Chapel. Similarly, Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper dazzles visitors to the Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio, but art lovers will be amazed by the paintings of Raphael and Piero della Francesca at the Pinacoteca di Brera. After all these mystical emotions, take a stroll through the pleasant Navigli district, where much of Milan’s cultural and nightlife is concentrated.

La Scala Theatre offers us two great pillars of the repertoire. On the one hand, Faust, one of the most famous French operas in the world, makes its return to Milan in a magnificent production by Johannes Erath. Gounod’s hero will be played by one of the best French singers of his generation, Julien Dran. On the other, Verdi’s fiery Requiem will be performed by a legendary musical team: Riccardo Chailly conducting, and Anna Netrebko, Elna Garanča, Fabio Sartori and Michele Pertusi as soloists. Breathtaking!

Ah! I laugh to see myself so beautiful in this mirror’… we all know this aria, made famous in its day by Hergé. Gounod’s Faust had not been performed at La Scala since 2010. The Milanese institution is marking the grand return of this jewel of French opera in a remarkable production by German director Johannes Erath. Concluding his tenure at the Opéra de Lyon, conductor Daniele Rustioni also returns to La Scala with a work whose melodic invention and dramatic intensity he magnifies. In addition to Alex Esposito’s impressive Mephistopheles, we are also delighted to hear Julien Dran‘s Faust on a stage as famous as La Scala. There is no doubt that, like Benjamin Bernheim, the French tenor is definitively entering the ranks of the greats. After her Norma in 2025, Marina Rebeka is finally the most moving Marguerite.

Premiered on 22 May 1874 at the Church of San Marco in Milan, under the baton of the composer himself, Verdi’s Requiem struck its first listeners with its vehemence and drama. A symbol of an extraordinary religious work in which the singers were great opera stars, the composer himself took his work to La Scala for three triumphant concerts. Alternating between orchestral clamour and tender outpourings, the Requiem culminates in a Dies Irae in which Verdi translates the terror of the Apocalypse into music. As with his premiere, Riccardo Chailly, director of the La Scala Orchestra since 2017, brings together four great opera singers: Anna Netrebko, Elῑna Garanča, Fabio Sartori and Michele Pertusi. With such a team, La Scala is sure to host an evening worthy of its legendary status.

RECOMMENDED VISITS

A Discovery of Milan

Discover Milan’s must-see sights through four iconic sites. Start with the Duomo, a majestic Gothic cathedral in the heart of the city, whose terrace offers breathtaking views of Milan. Right next door, stroll through the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, a historic shopping arcade with a glass roof, symbolising Milanese elegance. Continue on to the Castello Sforzesco, a Renaissance fortress that now houses several museums and works of art. Finally, don’t miss Leonardo da Vinci’s world-famous masterpiece, The Last Supper, on display at the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie.

Art & Design

Continue your discovery of Milan with the Pinacoteca di Brera, one of Italy’s most prestigious art museums, which has recently been expanded with a new modern extension. Then immerse yourself in the elegance of the 1930s at Villa Necchi, a sumptuous Art Deco residence set in peaceful gardens. Finish with the dreamlike and eclectic world of Fornasetti, where design, art and fantasy come together for a unique, typically Milanese experience.

Excursion to Lake Como

Discover the wonders of Lake Como, starting with Varenna, a charming village with picturesque streets, ideally accessible by boat to enjoy the beauty of the lake. Then stop off at Nesso to admire its famous stone bridge overlooking a spectacular waterfall. Next, head to Bellagio, known as ‘the pearl of the lake’, with its elegant narrow streets and exceptional views. In Menaggio, let yourself be seduced in the early hours of the day by the lungolago promenade, enveloped in a mystical mist. This is also an opportunity to visit the sumptuous Villa Balbianello before continuing on to Sala Comacina and its charming little island. Finally, for a quieter and more authentic stopover, opt for Lierna or Laglio, peaceful residential villages on the lake shore.
