All roads lead to Milan. The capital of Lombardy is the undisputed economic and cultural centre of the Italian peninsula. Upon arrival at Milano Centrale, visitors are struck by the grandeur and monumentality of the station’s architecture. The cathedral (and the extraordinary marble forest at its summit) and the Sforza Castle are two fascinating examples of this monumental heritage. While the astonishing Porta Nuova district (with its avant-garde buildings) bears witness to Milan’s current opulence, La Scala remains the absolute heart of the city and its inhabitants. Its Italian-style theatre, red boxes and incomparable atmosphere make it an essential destination for all opera lovers.

The temple of opera presents one of Verdi’s early masterpieces. Premiered at La Scala in 1842, Nabucco is conducted here by one of the world’s greatest conductors, Riccardo Chailly, director of La Scala since 2017. In a new production by Alessandro Talevi, the vocal cast brings together an anthology quartet: Francesco Meli, Lica Saldi, Michele Pertusi, Veronica Simeoni and, of course, the imperial Anna Netrebko as Abigaille.

Nabucco marks a major milestone in Verdi’s career. Premiered at La Scala in 1842, it was the Italian composer’s first major success. Set in biblical times in Jerusalem and Babylon, Nabucco deals with the fate of two peoples and cultures, but also with the madness of power. Verdi created some admirable scenes, such as the famous chorus ‘Va pensiero’ sung by the imprisoned Hebrews, and intense theatrical scenes full of drama and passion. For this new production, La Scala has called on Alessandro Talevi, a South African director of Italian origin. Continuing his exploration of Verdi’s early operas, conductor Riccardo Chailly remains faithful to his meticulous study of the score by adding the divertimenti written by the composer for the 1848 revival in Brussels. The vocal cast promises a breathtakingly intense performance, as alongside the two Italian stars Luca Salsi and Francesco Meli, we find Anna Netrebko, who displays an Abigaille of major vocal stature.

RECOMMENDED VISITS

A Discovery of Milan

Discover Milan’s must-see sights through four iconic sites. Start with the Duomo, a majestic Gothic cathedral in the heart of the city, whose terrace offers breathtaking views of Milan. Right next door, stroll through the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, a historic shopping arcade with a glass roof, symbolising Milanese elegance. Continue on to the Castello Sforzesco, a Renaissance fortress that now houses several museums and works of art. Finally, don’t miss Leonardo da Vinci’s world-famous masterpiece, The Last Supper, on display at the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie.

Art & Design

Continue your discovery of Milan with the Pinacoteca di Brera, one of Italy’s most prestigious art museums, which has recently been expanded with a new modern extension. Then immerse yourself in the elegance of the 1930s at Villa Necchi, a sumptuous Art Deco residence set in peaceful gardens. Finish with the dreamlike and eclectic world of Fornasetti, where design, art and fantasy come together for a unique, typically Milanese experience.

Excursion to Lake Como

Discover the wonders of Lake Como, starting with Varenna, a charming village with picturesque streets, ideally accessible by boat to enjoy the beauty of the lake. Then stop off at Nesso to admire its famous stone bridge overlooking a spectacular waterfall. Next, head to Bellagio, known as ‘the pearl of the lake’, with its elegant narrow streets and exceptional views. In Menaggio, let yourself be seduced in the early hours of the day by the lungolago promenade, enveloped in a mystical mist. This is also an opportunity to visit the sumptuous Villa Balbianello before continuing on to Sala Comacina and its charming little island. Finally, for a quieter and more authentic stopover, opt for Lierna or Laglio, peaceful residential villages on the lake shore.
