Venice invites you to explore its back streets. Of course, the sublime St. Mark’s Square remains busy, but it’s easy to find yourself alone in an alleyway once you venture a little further from the centre.  The wonderfully lively Cannaregio district preserves the authenticity of Venetian life. You can enjoy cicchetti in a typical restaurant with the locals. Of course, you must visit the Rialto Bridge and the Bridge of Sighs, but among the lesser-known treasures of La Serenissima are the mysterious Ponte dei Pugni (Bridge of Fists), the Ponte Chiodo and many other hidden gems. You are sure to enjoy some wonderful walks…

The La Fenice season also has many surprises in store. During this trip, we invite you to discover an absolute rarity: Henri de Bourgogne, the first opera performed during Donizetti’s lifetime. The night before, Italian conductor Corrado Rovaris will finally conduct an extremely original programme.

Programme:

– A. Honegger: Pastorale d’Été

– A. Piazzolla: Three Tangos

– W. A. Mozart: Symphony No. 38 in D major kv 504 Prague

Italian conductor Corrado Rovaris (currently music director of the Philadelphia Opera) presents a truly unique concert. Written in the Swiss Alps, Arthur Honegger’s Pastorale d’Été is a superb early work. The depth and sensuality of tango are irresistible. Created in 1963, Piazzolla’s Tres tangos contain the essence of this refined musical genre. Symphony No. 38, ‘Prague’, is one of Mozart’s most beautiful works. Composed between The Marriage of Figaro and Don Giovanni, the symphony possesses the virtuosity of the former and the power of the latter. A real treat!

Brunone

This is a wonderful rediscovery! First performed at the Teatro San Luca (now the Teatro Goldoni) in Venice in 1818, Henri de Bourgogne was Donizetti’s first opera to be staged. The libretto, written by Bartolomeo Merelli, tells the story of a dark rivalry between two men against the backdrop of the usurped crown of Burgundy. Barely twenty years old, Donizetti was naturally inspired by Rossini, but already showed signs of a melodic genius, as virtuosic as it was colourful, that was uniquely his own. We can count on the combined forces of La Fenice in Venice to do justice to this youthful gem, with a predominantly Italian vocal cast.

A DISCOVERY OF VENICE

It is impossible to imagine a first visit to Venice without taking in its iconic landmarks. St. Mark’s Basilica, with its golden mosaics, embodies the full splendour of Byzantine art. Just next door, the Doge’s Palace reveals the inner workings of the Serenissima’s power. Next, head to the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, a true treasure of Venetian art, where Tintoretto’s frescoes cover entire walls. The Peggy Guggenheim Collection offers a contemporary contrast on the Grand Canal. And, of course, a gondola ride, with its play of shadows and reflections, is the perfect finale.

ART AND CRAFTSMANSHIP

To delve deeper into Venice, head to more intimate and emotionally resonant sites. The Fortuny Museum, housed in a serene Gothic palace, celebrates the dialogue between art, textiles, and light. The Prada Foundation, located in the Palazzo Corner della Regina, explores the most contemporary forms of creative expression. Yet it is in the workshops of Venetian artisans that the city’s secret heart beats: weavers of sumptuous velvets, oar sculptors, and gondola makers still craft unique pieces by hand, testaments to a savoir-faire passed down through the centuries.

ACROSS THE LAGOON

Explore the lagoon and uncover hidden treasures. Murano, famed for its blown glass, captivates with its millennia-old craftsmanship. Burano, with its brightly coloured houses and delicate lace, charms with its authentic atmosphere. The quieter, less frequented island of Giudecca invites exploration of the Church of the Redentore, Palladio’s masterpiece, and offers a different perspective on Venice. Along the Brenta River, elegant Palladian villas recount the splendour of times past. These places, rich in history and colour, reveal a lacustrine Venice that stands in striking contrast to the bustling historic centre.
