How can anyone resist the charm of Venice? From St Mark’s Square, the historic heart of the city, it is a real pleasure to stroll through this magical city. Around every corner, sumptuous palaces enchant the stroller, such as the Contarini del Bovolo palace with its famous spiral staircase. Located on the Grand Canal, the Golden House (‘La ca’ d’oro’) is another sublime Gothic building with a richly sculpted façade. To get a bird’s eye view, climb to the top of St. Mark’s Campanile to enjoy an exceptional panorama of La Serenissima. And for a truly unique experience, why not treat yourself to a gondola ride? The canals and Venetian palaces are dazzlingly beautiful from the water.

For this trip, we invite you to two proudly romantic evenings. The La Fenice Orchestra, conducted by Markus Stenz, will perform a ‘Sturm und Drang’ (storm and passion) concert, concluding with Schumann’s Spring Symphony. The following day, the Venetian theatre will present a new production of Wagner’s Lohengrin, directed by Damiano Michieletto, an Italian theatre director renowned for his opulent productions.

CONCERT CONDUCTED BY MARKUS STENZ

La Fenice Orchestra & Choir
Markus Stenz

Conductor

Programme :

– J.-F. Rebel: Les Éléments symphonie nouvelle: Le Chaos

– F. J. Haydn: Symphony No. 102 in B-flat Major Hob:I:102

– R. Schumann: Symphony No. 1 in B-flat Major Op. 38 Spring

This concert traces a subtle chronological arc. Dating from 1737, Rebel’s Le Chaos is a strikingly modern piece, foreshadowing the romantic storms of the 19th century. With its timpani rolls, Symphony No. 102 from 1795 also bears witness to Haydn’s creative fervour in his final years. Schumann’s Symphony No. 1, his first orchestral work, was composed in four days. This artistic urgency can be explained by the first months of his happy marriage to Clara. With contagious joy, German conductor Markus Stenz conducts this youthful masterpiece with spring-like energy. Splendid!

The king’s herald

Lohengrin is a milestone in Wagner’s oeuvre. Written between 1845 and 1848, the opera is somewhat of a precursor to the Tetralogy that would follow. With its themes borrowed from Christianity and folk tales, the composer laid the foundations for his future epic works. It was through this opera that he won over King Ludwig II of Bavaria (the Bavarian monarch had a grotto built in his Linderhof Palace so that he could enjoy the music of his favourite composer!). This opera, combining black magic and white magic, will benefit from a remarkable staging by Damiano Michieletto, recent triumphant director of such remarkable shows as Don Quixote at the Opéra Bastille and The Name of the Rose at La Scala in Milan. A leading specialist in the Italian repertoire, American Brian Jagde has the ideal voice to interpret Lohengrin. In the pit, German Markus Stenz promises a high-flying Wagnerian evening.

A DISCOVERY OF VENICE

It is impossible to imagine a first visit to Venice without taking in its iconic landmarks. St. Mark’s Basilica, with its golden mosaics, embodies the full splendour of Byzantine art. Just next door, the Doge’s Palace reveals the inner workings of the Serenissima’s power. Next, head to the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, a true treasure of Venetian art, where Tintoretto’s frescoes cover entire walls. The Peggy Guggenheim Collection offers a contemporary contrast on the Grand Canal. And, of course, a gondola ride, with its play of shadows and reflections, is the perfect finale.

ART AND CRAFTSMANSHIP

To delve deeper into Venice, head to more intimate and emotionally resonant sites. The Fortuny Museum, housed in a serene Gothic palace, celebrates the dialogue between art, textiles, and light. The Prada Foundation, located in the Palazzo Corner della Regina, explores the most contemporary forms of creative expression. Yet it is in the workshops of Venetian artisans that the city’s secret heart beats: weavers of sumptuous velvets, oar sculptors, and gondola makers still craft unique pieces by hand, testaments to a savoir-faire passed down through the centuries.

ACROSS THE LAGOON

Explore the lagoon and uncover hidden treasures. Murano, famed for its blown glass, captivates with its millennia-old craftsmanship. Burano, with its brightly coloured houses and delicate lace, charms with its authentic atmosphere. The quieter, less frequented island of Giudecca invites exploration of the Church of the Redentore, Palladio’s masterpiece, and offers a different perspective on Venice. Along the Brenta River, elegant Palladian villas recount the splendour of times past. These places, rich in history and colour, reveal a lacustrine Venice that stands in striking contrast to the bustling historic centre.
