Vienna is the romantic destination par excellence. Lined with luxury boutiques, the Graben is a magnificent pedestrian avenue. Of course, you can also admire Klimt’s Kiss in the superb Baroque Belvedere Palace. The Museum of Fine Arts offers an extraordinary exploration of the history of art. Countless masterpieces are on display, from Cranach’s Adam and Eve to the jewels of classical Rome and Egypt. Between two visits, take a break in one of the city’s legendary Kaffeehaus.

In the evening, we suggest the heartbreaking love story between Manon Lescaut and the Chevalier Des Grieux. Inspired by the novel by Abbé Prévost, Jules Massenet’s Manon is one of the absolute pinnacles of French opera. To embody these wonderful characters, the Vienna Staatsoper calls on two exceptional singers: the Russian Kristina Mkhitarian as Manon and Benjamin Bernheim, who asserts himself in the role of Des Grieux (but not only) as THE great French operatic artist of his generation. Embracing Andrei Șerban‘s staging, Bertrand de Billy is the ideal conductor to bring this memorable evening to fruition.

No man is a prophet in his own country, as the saying goes. Jules Massenet’s Manon is certainly considered one of the great operas of our repertoire, but while it has enjoyed a revival in France in recent years, the work has never left the stage of the Vienna Opera. Created in 1890, six years after its premiere in France, Manon has always been adored and performed in the Austrian capital. Since 2007, Andrei Șerban‘s staging has delighted music lovers at the Staatsoper with its psychological precision and symbolic density. As always in Vienna, the musical cast is superlative. We’re delighted to find the great French conductor Bertrand de Billy in the pit, faithful among the faithful on the world’s best stages (the adage we evoked above could also be addressed to him, given that his career takes place everywhere in the world except in France!). In the role of Manon, Russian Kristina Mkhitaryan portrays a complex heroine with a sensitivity that’s right up her alley. And then there’s Benjamin Bernheim‘s Des Grieux: his sunny voice and dramatic embodiment are already making history. Seeing and hearing the French tenor in the full maturity of his art would be enough to justify a trip to Vienna!
