Enter the legend of Venice! There are countless myths associated with the Italian Serenissima: the Grand Canal, St. Mark’s Square, the Doge’s Palace… Each church, each bridge (nearly 540!) has an incomparable history. Strolling through the Dorsoduro or Canavaggio neighborhoods is the promise of discovering an unexpected wonder. Nothing is more delightful than wandering through this fascinating architectural labyrinth. To take the measure of this sublime city, you have to climb the Campanile Saint-Marc: the panorama is breathtaking.

Our stay invites you to discover two great events. Rarely performed, Mefistofele by Boito (Verdi’s librettist) is first and foremost an essential opera in the Italian repertoire. Inspired by Goethe’s novel, this magnificent work will be performed at La Fenice in a staging by the French artist duo Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier, with the great bass-baritone Alex Esposito in the role of the diabolical character.

But on this 20th of April, Venice is all the more wonderful as the city’s famous Biennale of Contemporary Art opens. For its sixtieth edition, the international event promises an exceptional vintage. Placed under the direction of the Brazilian Adriano Pedrosa, the Biennale (with its famous national pavilions) will have as its theme “Foreigners”.

April 20, 2024
Saturday, April 20, 2024 - Venice

At 3:30 p.m., at Teatro La Fenice:

MEFISTOFELE, by A. Boito

Orchestra and chorus of Teatro La Fenice

Nicola Luisotti: Musical direction

Patrice Caurier: Director

Moshe Leiser: Director

Alex Esposito: Mefistofele

Piero Pretti:  Faust

Maria Agresta: Margherita

Premiered in 1868 at La Scala, Mefistofele is Arrigo Boïto’s masterpiece. Although it has never really left the stage, opera has long remained unknown outside the borders of Italy. However, the book is a magnificent synthesis of Goethe’s novel (Boyto is also the librettist of Verdi’s major operas such as Otello and Falstaff) and shows impressive dramatic qualities. The work also has a magnificent vocal trio with the couple Faust and Marguerite (here played by Piero Pretti and Maria Agresta) and above all Mephistopheles, star of the story and authentic workhorse for the basses who unfurl sublime arias for their tessitura.

At La Fenice, the formidable Italian bass-baritone Alex Esposito will play this major role. To stage this endearing work, we can count on the formidable French duo Patrice Caurier and Moshe Leiser, authors of inventive and often spectacular shows that triumph all over the world. An evening of echanting charm!
