Bayreuth is a myth. In 1876, Richard Wagner inaugurated a unique festival that would play exclusively his own works. It was the composer himself who drew up the plans for the new hall. Since nothing was to distract the audience’s attention from the music, an unprecedented orchestra pit was conceived: the musicians were hidden beneath the stage, offering a sound that was absolutely unique in the world. The Wagnerians spoke of a ‘mystical abyss’, and today the Bayreuth Festival is one of the most prestigious opera events on the planet.

In 2025, Bayreuth will be offering a veritable firework display. Of course, all eyes are already on the 150th anniversary edition, but the present festival appears to be a dazzling condensation of the work of Katharina Wagner (the composer’s great-granddaughter), who has been at the helm of the event since 2015. There will be the famous Ring directed by Valentin Schwarz, the astonishing Parsifal in ‘augmented reality’ with 3D glasses, and Thorleifur Örn Arnarsson‘s recent Tristan and Isolde. Among the new productions is the eagerly-awaited The Master Singers of Nuremberg by Matthias Davids, an expert in musicals! The guest musicians include some of the finest Wagnerians of our time: conductors Daniele Gatti, Christian Thielemann, Simone Young and singers as illustrious asAndreas Schager, Elīna Garanča, Michael Spyres, Camilla Nylund and Piotr Beczala.

THE RING – Tetralogy by Richard Wagner

Wagner’s Ring is a monolith in the history of music. This fabulous four-part epic took up almost twenty years of Wagner’s life. For some fifteen hours (spread over four evenings), the German composer draws on the sources of Germanic mythology to create a spectacle of total art, a miraculous fusion of theatre and music. A special festival palace had to be created in Bayreuth to host such a monument!

For the last time, the Festival 2025 will be staging the work of Austrian director Valentin Schwarz, who makes the story of the Nibelungen a passionately human affair. Here, it’s less a question of magic than of a family curse passed down through several generations. The great Australian conductor Simone Young is once again at the helm of this production, which will go down in the legend of Bayreuth’s great stagings. Come and witness the flamboyant twilight of a production that has already been compared to the legendary in loco productions by Wieland Wagner and Patrice Chéreau.

Tristan and Isolde is one of the most beautiful operas in the world. Conceived as an interlude during the composition of Siegfried (the third part of the Tetralogy), the opera achieves a complete fusion of text and music. From the very first bars of the prelude (Tristan’s famous dissonant chord), Wagner sweeps us along in a demented torrent of passion. Act 2 reaches musical and vocal heights that have perhaps never before been equalled. In 2025, the Bayreuth Festival will revive the production by Icelandic director Thorleifur Örn Arnarsson, which recalls the aesthetic purity of Wieland Wagner’s historical performances. The title couple Andreas Schager/Camilla Nylund unleash a thunderbolt, while conductor Semyon Bychkov deploys an orchestral flow of majestic refinement.

With Valentin Schwarz, Wagner’s Tetralogy becomes a story of family transmission. Here, there is no room for legend: theNibelungen Ring is a child to whom the clan’s fortune is passed on. In its wake come selfishness and individualism, just like the great evils of modern society. Composed in 1854, The Rhine Gold is a fairytale prelude. The opera’s style has nothing in common with that of Twilight of the Gods, written 20 years later. And yet there are so many sublime scenes, from the Prelude in E flat major symbolising the Rhine, to the scene in the forge and the entry of the gods into Walhalla! For this marvellous, magical opera, Bayreuth welcomes back an exceptional cast of singers, notably Tomasz Konieczny ‘s imperial Wotan and Christa Mayer’s Fricka.

While the world of The Rhine Gold was more akin to a fairytale, we enter a deeply human world with The Valkyrie. There is something of the soap opera about Wagner’s fabulous family dynasty. New characters emerge, dependent on the mistakes and failings of their elders, bringing with them their share of painful separations. Once again, director Valentin Schwarz favours a resolutely human and materialistic vision: the famous Valkyries (responsible for taking the bodies of the dead to Walhalla) are here clients of a cosmetic surgery clinic! To match this powerful vision, Valentin Schwarz can count on the flamboyant direction of conductor Simone Young, in tune with the exceptional singers, including Catherine Foster‘s moving Brünnhilde, the ideal incarnation of a heroine essential to Wagner’s dramaturgy. And then there’s Michael Spyres: the brilliant American tenor, well-versed in the French and belcanto repertoire, is dazzling in the role of Siegfried.

MONDAY AUGUST 18, 2025 - BAYREUTH

At the Festspielhaus:

In many ways, Siegfried, the third part of the Ring, is a return to its origins. Indeed, it was writing the libretto for this work that started it all for Wagner in 1848. Musically, the Song from the Forge and the famous Whispers from the Forest are among the Ring‘s finest moments. In 1876, Siegfried was the first opera to be performed at the Bayreuth Festival. Audiences at the time were certainly dazzled by the evolution of the composer’s language: the libretto multiplies intimate scenes with two characters, carried by the flow of an orchestra of cosmic proportions. When the show premiered in 2022, Act II of Siegfried appeared to be the most accomplished achievement in Valentin Schwarz‘s Tetralogy. The miracle is repeated here once again, carried off by the dazzling performance of Klaus Florian Vogt, a tenor who has already gone down in Wagnerian history.

Music lovers know and love Tristan and Isolde, the Ring and Parsifal. But some fervent Wagnerians would tell you that the absolute masterpiece of the German composer is The Mastersingers of Nuremberg! This truculent lyrical comedy is both a hymn to national art and a delicious description of provincial life. As we await the Ring for the 150th anniversary edition, Les Maîtres chanteurs is creating quite a stir, as it is the only new production this summer. And what a production it is! The vocal team includes no less than Georg Zeppenfeld (in the overwhelming title role), Michael Spyres and Christa Mayer, while in the pit, Daniele Gatti is quite simply one of the world’s finest conductors of the Wagnerian repertoire and beyond.

Attending a performance of the complete Ring, particularly in the legendary Bayreuth Theatre, is always a revelation. In this latest instalment, directors and conductors delve even deeper into their visions of a story and music that are decidedly immortal. In keeping with his materialistic vision, Valentin Schwarz ‘s Twilight of the Gods is a powerful satire, with the reign of men looking dangerously like the ultra-rich who rule us today. Everything in Twilight of the Gods is overblown: Wagner’s leitmotifs intersect and combine with each other, constantly generating new motifs. Everything we’ve seen and heard in the three previous instalments reaches new heights. Along with Klaus-Florian Vogt, conductor Simone Young promises to be the superstar of this Ring, which, let’s not forget, is being staged for the last time before the new 150th anniversary production.
