Vienna is a sublime combination of tradition and modernity. On the traditional side, its elegant avenues, its splendid palaces, its enchanting cafés or its extraordinary museums will delight all lovers of history and art. Popularized by Joseph Roth’s novel, the Capuchin Crypt where members of the Habsburg family rest exudes surreal emotion.

But the international quality of life rankings prove it every year: Vienna is a very lively city! In addition to the imperial splendour, there is also a pioneering and rebellious spirit in the Austrian capital The astonishing Hundertwasser House (designed by the architect of the same name) hosts avant-garde exhibitions. Similarly, the Neubau district is full of artists’ studios, shops and contemporary cafés.

It is this combination of tradition and modernity that we invite you to discover at the Vienna State Opera. Created in 1850, Wagner’s Lohengrin so seduced Ludwig II of Bavaria that he was inspired by it to build the fabulous Neuschwanstein Castle! After being performed at the Salzburg Festival, the staging by the duo Sergio Morabito and Jossi Wieler brings together a superb vocal cast including Malin Bystrom as Elsa and Anja Kampe as Ortrud. In the pit, Christian Thielemann asserts himself as one of the very best Wagnerian conductors of our time.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 8, 2024 - VIENNA

At 7 p.m., at the Wiener Staatsoper:

LOHENGRIN, by R. Wagner

Christian Thielemann: Conductor

Sergio Morabito: Director

Jossi Wieler: Director

Georg Zeppenfeld: Henry the Fowler

David Butt Philip: Lohengrin

Malin Byström: Elsa von Brabant

Martin Gantner: Telramund

Anja Kampe: Ortrud

Martin Hässler: The King’s Herald

Lohengrin is one of Richard Wagner’s first great masterpieces.  This “romantic opera in three acts” certainly anticipates German unification but has a very Italian flavour. For it sings a lot and beautifully in this reinterpretation of an old Germanic myth in which a knight with a swan appears to a queen. Moreover, Wagner already deploys major elements of his musical language such as leitmotifs or large choral ensembles.

This opera, mixing black and white magic, will benefit from a remarkable staging by Sergio Morabito and Jossi Wieler. The German playwright duo will also rely on the talent of renowned set and costume designer Anna Viebrock. In the vocal cast, the female roles stand out with the two splendid singers Malin Byström (Elsa) and Anja Kampe (Ortrud). While David Butt Philip as Lohengrin will be a wonderful revelation for many, Conductor Christian Thielemann has been able to show for many years what a great interpreter he was of Wagner’s music.
