Baden-Baden charms with its elegance and balance. The German town’s first heyday came in the 19th century. All the greats of the world came here on holiday, and Baden-Baden became the ‘summer capital’ of Europe in the summer months. Queen Victoria, Dostoyevsky and Victor Hugo all met here in a delightful Belle Epoque atmosphere.
Now, more than ever, Baden-Baden is asserting itself as one of the great summer capitals. Its architectural heritage is exceptionally well preserved, and its gastronomic delights (Alsace wines are not far away!) are matched only by its cultural offerings. Perpetuating its magnificent history, the Festspielhaus has come up with a festival called ‘Sommerfestspiele’, which takes over various venues in the city for a wide range of concerts. During our stay, we’ll be treated to a recital by soprano Lisette Oropesa. The day before, it’s time for the unofficial king of the festival: Quebec conductor Yannick-Nézet Séguin leads his Orchestre Métropolitain de Montréal in a breathtaking programme that culminates in a concerto by Saint-Saëns alongside pianist Alexandre Kantorow. At the height of the year, Baden-Baden is decidedly the ideal stop-off point.
