Amsterdam is unforgettable. Only a few hundred kilometers from Paris, the Dutch capital seduces both those who discover it for the first time, and those who return, certain to find a charm, freedom and splendor that belong only to the beautiful Dutch city. Amsterdam is, of course, its canals, its marvelous gabled houses, its “gezellig” cafes or its unique way of life in its adorable neighborhoods. But far from being a museum city, “Dam” for its friends is astonishing in its cultural effervescence.

During this stay, we invite you to visit two of the city’s artistic jewels: the Stedelijk Museum on a tour around the important retrospective dedicated to Marina Abramović, beacon of performance art, coupled with an evening at the Stopera (which has just been voted best opera company of the year 2023 by many specialized magazines). You will attend Puccini’s superb Triptych led by the pair Barrie Kosky (director) / Lorenzo Viotti (conductor).

FRIDAY, MAY 10, 2024 – AMSTERDAM

Free arrival in Amsterdam.

Check-in at your hotel, Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam from 3pm.

Tea Time and introduction to Performance Art with your Expert Speaker.

Private tour of Marina Abramović‘s exhibition, after public opening hours.

Of course, there are the Rijks and Van Gogh Museums in Amsterdam, but the Stedelijk (“municipal”) is certainly one of the most inventive and dynamic museums in the Dutch capital. Among its collections are sublime works spanning more than a century of artistic creation. From the Amsterdam School, to functionalism, from the Bauhaus to De Stijl, to the CoBrA and pop-art movement, the institution also has pieces by the most important contemporary artists such as Cindy Sherman, Steve McQueen or Marlene Dumas.

We invite you to enjoy a visit to the exceptional exhibition dedicated to Marina Abramović. In the company of our expert speaker, a specialist in the work of the Serbian artist, we will admire a retrospective covering more than half a century of production. With more than 60 works, including photographs, videos, sculptures, four iconic live performances, and two participatory works, the exhibition takes us from his beginnings in the former Yugoslavia to pioneering performances with his former partner Ulay to the works of his solo practice. Marina Abramović has been a leading figure in performance and body art since the 1970s. An early proponent of the use of the human body in performance, she constantly pushed her limits emotionally and physically, exposing herself to exhaustion, pain, and even the possibility of death.

Dinner at the end of the visit.

What a poster! It’s hard to imagine a more beautiful director/conductor duo than the one offered here in Amsterdam. On the one hand, Barrie Kosky has established himself as the most inventive playwright of his generation, with his scathing readings in Berlin (where he is director of the Komische Oper), and on the other, Lorenzo Viotti, the current music director of the Amsterdam Opera whose musical readings (and Instagram account!) are causing panic in the operatic world. At the end of their Puccini cycle, the two men present the Triptych, a masterpiece by the Tuscan composer whose centenary of death is being celebrated in 2024. A triptych like three operas centred on terror (Il Tabarro), sadness (Suor Angelica) and laughter (Gianni Schicchi).  To top it all off, this huge evening will see the debut of the great German baritone Michael Volle in the roles of Michele (Il Tabarro) and Gianni Schicchi, as well as the return to Amsterdam of the impressive Russian soprano Elena Stikhina in the demanding role of Suor Angelica.

The show ends around 10:45 p.m.

Dinner on your own.

Overnight at the hotel.
