Take a bath in the light and music of Orange. The Provençal city dazzles with its exceptional ancient heritage, but also with its shady streets and village atmosphere. Orange is a great place to live, home to such remarkable grape varieties as Gigondas and Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Since 1869, the Chorégies have been bringing warm summer evenings to life in a setting that is quite literally exceptional. Standing 35 metres high, the Théâtre Antique displays all its magic on a magnificent façade 103 metres long. Built in the 1st century BC, during the reign of Augustus, it is the best-preserved Roman theatre in Europe. It would be hard to imagine a better stage for singers as extraordinary as Anna Netrebko, Yusif Eyvazov, Marie-Nicole Lemieux and Aleksei Isaev, who will be performing an anthology of Verdi’s Trouvère. The day before, the great conductor Michele Spotti presents Berlioz’s grand and jubilant Symphonie Fantastique.

LA SYMPHONIE FANTASTIQUE, by H. Berlioz – SYMPHONIC CONCERT

Philharmonic Orchestra of Marseille

Michele Spotti: Conductor

Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique is a unique milestone in the history of music. In 1830, Hector Berlioz fell madly in love with a Shakespearean actress, Harriet Smithson. To recount his all-consuming passion, the French composer imagined a large-scale work (nearly fifty minutes) in five strongly contrasting episodes. Never before has a symphony spoken so much of its author, and never before has the orchestra roared, growled or shuddered so much, thanks to an art of orchestration in which the instruments combine their timbres in unheard-of blends. It is this romantic masterpiece that the Philharmonic Orchestra of Marseille performs before the walls of the grand Théâtre Antique. The Marseilles orchestra benefits from the superlative baton of its new musical director, the Italian Michele Spotti.

Le Trouvère is the archetypal Italian Romantic opera. A nocturnal tragedy, with its characters consumed by the fire of passion and its plot piling up the violent deaths, Verdi’s opera marvels at its dramatic power and majestic emotions. We’re all familiar with the joke attributed to the conductor Arturo Toscanini: to make a success of Le Trouvère, all you have to do is hire the four best singers in the world. And what if the Chorégies d’Orange had just pulled off the four aces? In the role of Leonora, the Théâtre Antique welcomes no less than the immense Netrebko. In the role of Manrico, Yusif Eyvazov is the ideal accompanist, while Marie-Nicole Lemieux (Azucena) and Aleksei Isaev (Il Conte Luna) complete a decidedly great cast. At the helm of the Philharmonic of Marseille and the Choirs of the Chorégies, Italy’s Jader Bignamini (currently musical director of the prestigious Detroit Symphony Orchestra) provides a fitting accompaniment to the event.

In the event of bad weather, the performance will take place the following evening.
