In summer, Verbier is dazzling. Although the Swiss resort is often associated with winter sports, its vast alpine domain reveals its full natural splendour in the warmer months. Hiking trails lead to Lake Vaux and along delightful mountain paths, where marmots – and, for the luckiest walkers, chamois – accompany moments of quiet reverie. Upon return, the culinary offer is generous, ranging from hearty raclette or fondue to refined gastronomic dining.

Yet Verbier in summer would be unthinkable without the festival founded by Martin Engstroem in 1994. Conceived as a celebration of conviviality, the Verbier Festival welcomes musicians in a spirit that allows them to feel entirely at home. It is therefore not uncommon to encounter a world-renowned artist in the street or at the local supermarket. The guests of this edition are once again extraordinary: Martha Argerich, Alexandre Kantorow, Khatia Buniatishvili, Leonidas Kavakos, and a highly anticipated Bluebeard’s Castle by Bartók conducted by the eminent Sir Simon Rattle. The world’s finest soloists return regularly to Verbier, drawn by the unique atmosphere of the festival – and one readily understands why.

Programme:

Works for two pianos, to be announced

– R. Schumann: Dichterliebe, Op. 48

Martha Argerich needs no introduction. The incomparable Argentine pianist, a virtuoso of genius, has enjoyed a brilliant solo career, yet the “lioness of the piano” above all cherishes making music with fellow artists. Her collaborations with Daniel Barenboim and Nelson Freire have become legendary, and her new partnership with the young and exceptionally gifted French pianist Alexandre Kantorow promises to be equally remarkable. In the second half of the evening, Argerich accompanies the ever-moving Magdalena Kožená in Schumann’s Dichterliebe, a sublime song cycle that captures with rare acuity the volatility of love.

– F. Schubert: Impromptu No. 3 in G-flat major, D. 899; Ständchen in D minor, S. 560;

– F. Couperin: Les Barricades mystérieuses;

– F. Liszt: Consolation No. 3, S. 172; Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 in C-sharp minor (arr. V. Horowitz / K. Buniatishvili).

At the Verbier Festival, musicians who have passed through the Academy and gone on to international careers are affectionately known as “success stories”. Khatia Buniatishvili is among the most brilliant of these alumni, now a towering figure of the contemporary piano scene. In this recital, she reveals the full range of her extraordinary artistry, from the Baroque refinement of Bach and Couperin to the Romantic breadth of Schubert, Chopin and Liszt. Her commanding stage presence transforms each recital into a memorable event, and her expressive freedom continues to inspire a growing circle of devoted admirers.

11 a.m., Verbier Station Church:

NOBUYUKI TSUJII

Nobuyuki Tsujii

Piano

Programme:

– E. Grieg: Lyric Pieces, excerpts ;

– F. Chopin: Two Nocturnes, Op. 27; Andante spianato et Grande Polonaise brillante ;

– C.Debussy: Rêverie; Images, Book I ;

– P. I. Tchaikovsky: The Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a (arr. Mikhail Pletnev), excerpts.

Blind from birth, Nobuyuki Tsujii won the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2009. His visual impairment naturally captures the imagination, as his fingers glide across the keyboard in an astonishing choreography. Van Cliburn himself described Tsujii as a pianist of radiant brilliance and purity of soul. Renowned particularly for his Mozart interpretations, the Japanese pianist presents in Verbier a refined programme that moves from the iridescent lyricism of Grieg to the shimmering colours of Debussy and the enchantment of The Nutcracker. Chopin’s Grande Polonaise brillante crowns this luminous recital.

6.30 p.m., Salle des Combins:

HARDING | BELL | TERFEL

Verbier Festival Orchestra
Daniel Harding

Conductor

Joshua Bell Violin
Bryn Terfel

Bass-baritone

– J. Bock & S. Harnick: Excerpts from Fiddler on the Roof, including “If I Were a Rich Man” ;

– S. Rachmaninov: Symphony No. 2 in E minor, Op. 27

Joshua Bell, Bryn Terfel and Daniel Harding are three essential figures of today’s musical world, as well as pillars of the Verbier Festival. Their individual appearances at Verbier have produced countless legendary evenings, making their collaboration an obvious and eagerly awaited event. The programme is strikingly original, combining a rarely heard concerto by de Hartmann, iconic excerpts from Fiddler on the Roof, and the deeply lyrical Symphony No. 2 by Rachmaninov. Three exceptional works for a golden trio.
FRIDAY 24 JULY 2026

Breakfast at your hotel.

Day and meals at leisure.

11 a.m., Verbier Station Church:

KAVAKOS | FUJITA

Leonidas Kavakos Violin
Mao Fujita

– J. Brahms: Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 1 in G major, Op. 78 ;

– F. Schubert: Fantasy in C major for Violin and Piano, D. 934.

The Verbier Festival offers musicians a rare opportunity to step outside their usual routines: to recharge amid mountain air and to meet fellow artists in an atmosphere conducive to artistic exploration. The festival’s concept of “unexpected encounters” brings together musicians from different horizons in chamber music collaborations that often extend far beyond Verbier. This concert unites the luminous artistry of Leonidas Kavakos with the poetic sensitivity of the young Japanese pianist Mao Fujita, winner of the Clara Haskil Competition, in a programme ideally suited to their shared musical vision.

6.30 p.m., Salle des Combins:

RATTLE | KOŽENÁ | FINLEY

Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra
Sir Simon Rattle

Conductor

Magdalena Kožená Mezzo-soprano
Gerald Finley

Bass-baritone

Programme:

– W. A. Mozart: Symphony No. 38 in D major, K. 504 “Prague” ;

– B. Bartók: Bluebeard’s Castle, Sz. 48.

Sir Simon Rattle is among the most faithful figures of the Verbier Festival. Formerly Music Director of the Berlin Philharmonic and the London Symphony Orchestra, and now leading the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, he returns with a programme perfectly matched to his artistry. Mozart’s Symphony No. 38 unfolds with brilliance and dramatic vitality, while the second half offers one of the festival’s most powerful operatic experiences. Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle, a work of profound psychological insight, is brought to life by Magdalena Kožená and Gerald Finley in a performance of rare intensity.
