Verdi’s music is inseparable from Venice. No fewer than five operas were commissioned by La Fenice theatre, the most notable of which are La Traviata and Simon Boccanegra. It is precisely this latter masterpiece that the Venetian institution has chosen to perform. Although the action takes place in 14th-century Genoa, the whole of La Serenissima lends itself wonderfully to the plot. Visitors will of course visit the Doge’s Palace and its sublime ornate rooms, St Mark’s Basilica and its extraordinary Byzantine mosaics, not to mention the marvellous palazzi, where Simon Boccanegra could live and stroll. The charm of Venice remains eternal, while embracing modernity, as evidenced by the magnificent contemporary art collections at the Punta della Dogana.

Attending a new production at La Fenice is always a privilege, but when it comes to a Verdi opera, you are guaranteed an unforgettable evening, performed by an Italian team entirely devoted to the Italian composer’s music. Viva Verdi (and Venice)!

For some, it is Verdi’s finest opera — or at least his deepest and most dramatic. In fact, the Italian composer entirely reworked the score in 1881, twenty-five years after its premiere, in pursuit of the lyrical ideal he had long envisioned. This masterpiece, belonging to the composer’s final creative period alongside Otello and Falstaff, may well feature the greatest Verdi baritone role ever written. As the former corsair turned Doge of Genoa, Simone Piazzola is nothing short of magnificent, his performance capturing even the subtlest shades of a profoundly complex character. Yet in this opera, rich with sublime duets, Alex Esposito’s Fiesco is equally compelling and promises moments of thrilling confrontation. One can also count on conductor Renato Palumbo to bring out the dark splendor of Verdi’s orchestration. Completing the promise of an exceptional evening, Luca Micheletti’s staging — rooted in the truth of theater (Micheletti is himself also a singer) — will ignite this searing meditation on power.

When Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata premiered at the Teatro La Fenice on March 6, 1853, the Venetian audience was taken aback. For the very first time, a tragic opera was built around a contemporary story and a heroine living on the margins of society: the Parisian courtesan Violetta Valéry. The work was thus deeply rooted in the social realities of its time, while offering psychological portraits of rare subtlety. La Traviata abounds with unforgettable moments: the duet between Violetta and Germont, Alfredo’s aria, and of course the blazing final scene, here brought to life by Rosa Feola, an outstanding interpreter of Violetta. To experience La Traviata in the very city of its birth is an unmissable opportunity — all the more so in Robert Carsen’s celebrated staging, first presented at the reopening of La Fenice in 2004. A must!

A DISCOVERY OF VENICE

It is impossible to imagine a first visit to Venice without taking in its iconic landmarks. St. Mark’s Basilica, with its golden mosaics, embodies the full splendour of Byzantine art. Just next door, the Doge’s Palace reveals the inner workings of the Serenissima’s power. Next, head to the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, a true treasure of Venetian art, where Tintoretto’s frescoes cover entire walls. The Peggy Guggenheim Collection offers a contemporary contrast on the Grand Canal. And, of course, a gondola ride, with its play of shadows and reflections, is the perfect finale.

ART AND CRAFTSMANSHIP

To delve deeper into Venice, head to more intimate and emotionally resonant sites. The Fortuny Museum, housed in a serene Gothic palace, celebrates the dialogue between art, textiles, and light. The Prada Foundation, located in the Palazzo Corner della Regina, explores the most contemporary forms of creative expression. Yet it is in the workshops of Venetian artisans that the city’s secret heart beats: weavers of sumptuous velvets, oar sculptors, and gondola makers still craft unique pieces by hand, testaments to a savoir-faire passed down through the centuries.

ACROSS THE LAGOON

Explore the lagoon and uncover hidden treasures. Murano, famed for its blown glass, captivates with its millennia-old craftsmanship. Burano, with its brightly coloured houses and delicate lace, charms with its authentic atmosphere. The quieter, less frequented island of Giudecca invites exploration of the Church of the Redentore, Palladio’s masterpiece, and offers a different perspective on Venice. Along the Brenta River, elegant Palladian villas recount the splendour of times past. These places, rich in history and colour, reveal a lacustrine Venice that stands in striking contrast to the bustling historic centre.
