Munich is one of the most musical cities in the world. Its well-preserved historic centre is an invitation to stroll around, and its extraordinary museums offer the gentlest of contemplations. Let yourself be lulled by its opulent atmosphere and the charms of its verdant parks. Nymphenburg Palace, with its richly decorated galleries and exotic cabinets, offers a real journey back to the Baroque age. And beyond the city limits, an excursion to Neuschwanstein Castle awakens our dreams of an enchanted palace.

For this spellbinding holiday, we present two masterpieces of the operatic repertoire. Led by the formidable soprano Serena Sáenz, Donizetti’s La Fille du régiment is a feast of humour and wit, directed by the aesthete Damiano Michieletto. Just as sparkling is Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro, sassyly staged by Evgeny Titov. Among the impressive vocal cast, we are delighted to applaud Frenchmen Philippe Sly and Julie Fuchs as Figaro and Suzanne in Beaumarchais’ play.

La Fille du Régiment was Donizetti’s first work written in French. Premiered in 1840 at the Opéra-Comique, the work is a marvel of fantasy that directly foreshadows Offenbach. In this subtle blend of bravura arias and tender romances, the composer paints a delightful portrait of Marie, performed here by the formidable Serena Sáenz. The soprano will be accompanied by the legendary Susan Graham in the role of the Countess. As for the staging, Italian director Damiano Michieletto has created a magnificent set, accentuating the contrast between nature and the city in the libretto. In the pit, Stefano Montanari is an immense Baroque conductor, who possesses all the art of this energising repertoire.

The Marriage of Figaro is one of the most famous operas in history. With his librettist Lorenzo da Ponte, Mozart imagined lyrical and theatrical whirlwinds of breathtaking virtuosity. Originally inspired by Beaumarchais’s play, the work is a scathing satire of the aristocracy of the late 18th century, but also a superb character study. Russian director Evgeny Titov‘s invigorating staging of Les Noces is reminiscent of commedia dell’arte. As well as Dorothea Röschmann as Marcellina and Willard White as Bartolo, we can’t help but notice our own Philippe Sly and Julie Fuchs as Figaro and Suzanna. These two beasts of the stage will be conducted here by the ultra-precise baton of Susanna Mälkki, one of the great conductors of our time.
