Bayreuth is a legend. In 1876, Richard Wagner inaugured a festival unlike any other, devoted exclusively to his own works. It was the composer himself who designed the plans for the new theatre. Since nothing was to distract the audience from the music, an unprecedented orchestra pit was conceived: the musicians are hidden beneath the stage, producing a sound that is unique in the world. Wagnerians spoke of a ‘mystical abyss’, and today the Bayreuth Festival remains one of the most prestigious operatic events on the planet.
2026 marks the 150th anniversary of the festival. Memories still linger of the triumphant (after a stormy debut!) Ring production by Patrice Chéreau in 1976. For this milestone edition, the Bayreuth Festival envisions a Tetralogy unlike any other. Under the codename Ring 1001011 (150 in computer language), the cycle promises a visual tour de force and a magnificent reflection on the festival’s history. By generating unpredictable sets and projections, artificial intelligence will bring to life images drawn from previous Bayreuth productions. This fresh and original approach is particularly striking, especially with conductor Christian Thielemann leading a stellar roster of Wagnerian singers: Michael Volle, Camilla Nylund, Elza van den Heever, and Klaus Florian Vogt.
As an option, we offer the three other Wagner operas presented during this 2026 edition. First, the very rare Rienzi, an early opera conducted by the great French maestro Nathalie Stutzmann, alongside revivals of the highly acclaimed Flying Dutchman staged by Dmitri Tcherniakov, and the astonishing Parsifal, presented in ‘augmented reality’ with 3D glasses, conceived by American director Jay Scheib. The 2026 edition promises to be a landmark in the history of the Bayreuth Festival.
