Nestling on the edge of the Black Forest, Baden-Baden is a city of culture and art. Some of the world’s greatest names (Dostoyevsky, Brahms, Wagner, Hugo…) have lived and worked here, and the town has preserved a vibrant record of their lives. The Fabergé Museum, an astonishing institution dedicated to the jeweller of the famous Eggs, and the Frieder Burda, one of Europe’s leading museums of modern and contemporary art, are not to be missed.

For relaxation, who can resist the thermal delights of the Friedrichsbad baths (opened in 1877) or the Caracalla baths (located in a more modern building) ? The pleasures of Baden-Baden’s thermal springs have been known and recognised since Latin times…

On this trip, we invite you to enjoy an exceptional musical experience. In the Festspielhaus, Teodor Currentzis presents two immense masterpieces of the Germanic repertoire: Mahler‘s Symphony No. 5 and Bruckner‘s monumental Symphony No. 9. At the head of the Utopia Orchestra, the Greek conductor promises us emotions in capital letters !

Teodor Currentzis: Conductor

Mahler, Symphony n°5 in C Sharp minor

Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 is the story of a rebirth. In 1901, the Austrian composer met the love of his life: Alma Schindler, the daughter of a famous Viennese landscape architect. The first two movements retrace the serious health problems that almost cost the artist his life a few months earlier. While the mythical Adagietto (imagined as a gift to his new fiancée) and the glorious Finale confirm the return to happiness, Teodor Currentzis expressly wishes to draw our attention to the third movement, the keystone of the entire Symphony. A scherzo of which the composer himself said: “Each note is of radical vitality and the whole turns like a whirlpool, like a wave or like the hair of a comet”. In Baden-Baden, Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 as you’ve probably never heard it before!

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2024 - BADEN-BADEN

At 6pm, at the Festspielhaus :

TEODOR CURRENTZIS – A. BRUCKNER

Utopia Orchestra

Teodor Currentzis: Conductor

Bruckner, Symphonie n°9 in D minor

Bruckner’s sublime Symphony No. 9 ! The final (unfinished) work by a Romantic giant, the work impresses with its grandeur and emotional power. Long misunderstood and mocked by his contemporaries, Anton Bruckner here reaches the quintessence of his art and equals (if not surpasses ?) the force of his mentor Richard Wagner. The Adagio in particular, seems to have been written when the composer was already standing, one foot in eternity. It is this legendary milestone in the history of music that conductor Teodor Currentzis has chosen to perform with his Utopia Orchestra, a collaborative group made up of musicians from a dozen countries.
