On a presidential visit, Bill Clinton famously remarked: “Baden-Baden is so nice that you have to name it twice.” Nestled in the heart of the Black Forest, this spa town is one of the most beautiful cities in Germany. Its architectural heritage is exceptionally well preserved, and the subtlety of its gastronomy (with Alsace wines close at hand!) is matched only by the quality of its accommodations. Offering a remarkably scenic stroll, the Lichtentaler Allee is a true green jewel, home to nearly 300 species of rare plants. No visit to Baden-Baden would be complete without a trip to Caracalla Baths, one of the world’s most beautiful thermal baths. At the forefront of modernity, the Frieder Burda Museum showcases the elite of contemporary art.

In Baden-Baden, culture and music flourish year-round. Since its opening in 1998, the Festspielhaus has welcomed the world’s greatest ensembles. For our visit, we present two absolute specialists in their repertoires: Teodor CurrentzisUtopia Orchestra will deliver a legendary performance of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, while the German Baroque Orchestra Balthasar-Neumann will present a masterful complete cycle of Bach’s six Brandenburg Concertos. Two evenings at the pinnacle of artistry.

Programme:

– D. Chostakovitch: Violin Concerto No. 1 in A minor, Op. 77
– I. Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring

The great conductor Teodor Currentzis returns to Baden-Baden with his collaborative ensemble Utopia, which brings together top-tier musicians from the finest international orchestras. The Greek maestro is never more dazzling than in the Russian repertoire, where he truly excels. Under his direction, Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring takes on the force of a volcanic tsunami, recapturing the freshness of this unique music that caused the most famous scandal in history at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in 1913. A prodigy who has grown into a superstar, Daniel Lozakovich has been dazzling audiences worldwide since the age of fifteen. The Swedish violinist tackles here Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1, written during the darkest hours of Stalin’s regime and the Zhdanov Doctrine. With Currentzis on the podium, this twentieth-century masterpiece promises an intensity and fiery passion that is utterly spellbinding!

CONCERTOS BRANDEBOURGEOIS, by J. S. Bach

Balthasar-Neumann-Orchester

Programme:

– J. S. Bach: Brandenburg Concertos Nos. 1–6

The famous Brandenburg Concertos refer to six concerti grossi in which Bach employed the instruments of the Baroque orchestra in various (and daring) combinations. A grand synthesis of Italian and French Baroque styles, the Brandenburgs—named after their dedicatee, Count Christian Ludwig of Brandenburg—represent one of the absolute pinnacles of eighteenth-century musical aesthetics. One can rely on the Balthasar-Neumann Orchestra’s historically informed performance on period instruments to highlight the inexhaustible vitality of this essential music. Founded in 1995 by Thomas Hengelbrock, the German Baroque ensemble has now secured its place at the very top of Europe’s concert scene.
