Baden-Baden is the jewel of the Black Forest. A true emblem of the city, the Kurhaus houses one of the most beautiful casinos in Europe. The town also offers superb walks, such as the magnificent Lichtentaler Allee, where Johannes Brahms loved to find inspiration. At number 85, his house provides a moving testimony to the summers the German composer spent there between 1865 and 1874, creating unforgettable masterpieces. Among other notable attractions in Baden-Baden, the Fabergé Museum is a must-visit, featuring, among other treasures, four of the fifty-two eggs that the famous Russian jeweler crafted at the end of the nineteenth century. And one must not forget to enjoy the charms of the Caracalla Baths, one of the world’s most delightful thermal spas.

Under the baton of Kirill Petrenko, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra regularly returns to Baden-Baden. For its winter visit, this legendary German ensemble presents two titanic pillars of the symphonic repertoire: Respighi’s lush Roman Trilogy and Strauss’s monumental Also sprach Zarathustra. The guest soloists are equally exceptional: the rising star of opera Jonathan Tetelman delivers a collection of verismo arias, while the remarkable Icelandic pianist Vikingur Ólafsson presents his interpretation of Brahms’ expansive First Piano Concerto.

– O. Respighi: Roman Trilogy – Fountains of Rome, Pines of Rome, & Roman Festivals

– Verismo Arias with Jonathan Tetelman

The legendary Berlin Philharmonic makes its grand return to Baden-Baden! For this new program at the Festspielhaus, Kirill Petrenko’s ensemble delivers an incredible symphonic powerhouse, perfectly suited to showcase the remarkable qualities of this world-class orchestra. Composed between 1916 and 1928, Respighi’s Roman Trilogy enchants with its lush orchestration, monumental effects, and a musical language that anticipates the great Hollywood film scores of the twentieth century. And since in Italy opera is never far away, the concert concludes with a recital of verismo arias by the American Chilean tenor, whose passion and lyrical intensity evoke none other than a new Plácido Domingo. Viva Italia!

7pm, Festspielhaus:

ALSO SPRACH ZARATHOUSTRA

Berliner Philharmoniker Orchestra
Kirill Petrenko Conductor

Víkingur Ólafsson Piano

Programme:

– J. Brahms: Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor, Op. 15

– R. Strauss: Also sprach Zarathustra, Op. 30

In 1896, Richard Strauss was a highly ambitious 32-year-old composer. With Also sprach Zarathustra, the German composer drew inspiration from a book by Nietzsche and created his most extravagant symphonic poem. The opening fanfare is one of the most famous passages in all music history: from the rumble of the lower instruments emerge three trumpet notes that soon cascade across the entire orchestra. Before this orchestral monument, conductor Kirill Petrenko invites Icelandic pianist Vikingur Ólafsson to perform Brahms’ expansive Piano Concerto No. 1, a true passionate love letter to Clara Schumann.
