Experience a magical New Year in Vienna! The Austrian capital turns into a giant ballroom on Saint-Sylvester. Starting noon, the well-know Silversterpfad (Saint-Sylvester path) draws a wonderful walk through the city-center. From the Neuer Markt to the Graben, the Kärtnerstrasse or the Stephansplatz, stands, animations and tents offer a fantastic festive atmosphere. Dance academies take on the Graben, one of the main streets of the city, to teach you how to waltz! After admiring Klimt’s masterpieces at Sécession or Belvédère, you can also visit the Schönbrunn castle, where the most romantic Christmas market waits for you.

But New Year’s Eve in Vienna would not be complete without the traditional concert of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra at the Musikverein. For Saint-Sylvester’s 2023 concert, the great German conductor Christian Thielemann will preside over the festivities. After the show, do not hesitate to mingle with the crowd. The Pummerin, the famous bell of Saint-Etienne cathedral magically rings at midnight, and before you even realise, you will be dancing at the Sound of the Beautiful Blue Danube!

Some say that the waltz comes from Provence. Others think that waltz finds its roots in Germanic culture. But nowadays, waltz is first and foremost Viennese, since this well-known three-beats dance has had its moment of glory in 19th century Vienna. Some historians have estimated that on some evenings, almost a quarter of Viennese reunited in dance halls in 1850! Amongst the great composers, we naturally count the Strauss dynasty. With them, Vienna turned into a swirl of parties and dances. As for operetta, it’s hard to resist the elegance of Johann Strauss’s The Bat, the charm of Kalman’s Princesse Czardas or the humour of Lehár’s The Merry Widow. Created in 1905, the latter met a tremendous worldwide success. Some say that it was played almost 300 000 times during the composer’s lifetime! It is this prodigious repertory that Christian Thielemann brings back to life during the mythic Saint-Sylvester show at the Musikverein. What better orchestra to interpret these gems than the Philharmonic orchestra of Vienna, which owns these melodies in its heart and its soul?

End of the show expected around 9:45pm.
