Here is a holiday full of colour! Exuberance reigns supreme in Vienna. The colourful tiled roof of the magnificent St. Stephen’s Cathedral sets the tone right from the start. Another jewel of the Austrian capital, the Church of St. Charles Borromeo is one of Europe’s most beautiful Baroque churches. The collections of the Belvedere Palace, with its extraordinary paintings by Klimt, also promise to dazzle.

Our show takes place in the warm light of Sicily. In Jean-Pierre Ponnelle acclaimed productions, Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci and Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana rediscover their fiery colours. These two passionate masterpieces of verist opera are embodied here by two of the greatest operatic stars of our time: Elīna Garanča and Jonas Kaufmann.

We invite you to a historic production. Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci are two operas traditionally performed together. Created in 1985, Jean-Pierre Ponnelle‘s staging is resolutely “old-fashioned”: the action is set in a Sicilian village in the 1930s. The production’s strength and elegance have already served as a backdrop for such legendary singers as José Carreras and Placido Domingo in Paillasse, or Gwyneth Jones and Ileana Cotrubas in Cavalleria Rusticana. For this eagerly-awaited revival, the Vienna Opera has assembled a superlative cast, including Elina Garanča and Jonas Kaufmann. To attend a performance of the Cavalleria rusticana/Pagliacci diptych is to enter a world of extreme passions, where love and death coexist with excess. The quintessence of Italian opera.
