The Gala of the Spanish Riding School offers a splendid show dating from the Habsburg period. Male and female riders in tailcoats ride sublime Lipizzaner stallions, creating the most graceful harmony between man and animal.

It is estimated that on certain evenings in 1850, nearly a quarter of Vienna’s population would gather in ballrooms to dance. Just as Paris has the Eiffel Tower, the waltz is the ultimate embodiment of Vienna. Among the great composers of the triple-time rhythm, one naturally finds the Strauss dynasty: Johann Strauss Sr. (1804–1849), soon followed by his three sons – Johann Strauss II (1825–1899), Josef (1827–1870), and Eduard (1835–1916). With them, Vienna was transformed into a whirlwind of celebrations and polkas. Their music – at once lyrical, melancholic, and ethereal – later earned the admiration of the greatest modern musicians. If there is one tradition deeply rooted in the hearts of the Viennese, it is the New Year’s Concert in the legendary Musikverein hall. Following the Quebec-born Yannick Nézet-Séguin, a fresh breeze is now sweeping through this globally renowned event. For New Year 2027, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra has chosen a conductor just past fifty: Tugan Sokhiev. The orchestra’s president, Daniel Froschauer, explains the choice as follows: ‘Tugan Sokhiev has been a close collaborator, both musically and personally, since 2009. From our very first concerts together, a great trust and deep mutual understanding were quickly established, and they have continued to grow and evolve ever since.’ Born in 1977, Tugan Sokhiev is one of the leading conductors of his generation. In demand by the world’s finest ensembles, he served for several years as music director of Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre, though he is best known in France for having led the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse for fourteen years. Under his baton, the Toulouse Orchestra reached world-class heights and delighted local audiences. Armed with experience in both operatic and symphonic repertoire, the Russian conductor now makes his highly anticipated debut at the helm of the New Year’s Concert. There is no doubt that his charisma and his choice of waltzes will join the legend of a program previously conducted by such iconic figures as Herbert von Karajan, Claudio Abbado, and Carlos Kleiber.
