In Tyrol, the surrounding mountains and the art of living invite a new perception. The Swarovski Kristallwelten in Wattens open the eye to the iridescent shades of crystal. For hikers, the view to and from the summit of the Kaisergebirge (Emperor’s massif) offers the prospect of inspiring nature. For painting enthusiasts, Innsbruck is not to be outdone, with the Tirol Panorama, a 1,000 m² fresco in which Michael Zeno Diemer’s brush recounts the battles of independence against Napoleon. The imposing fortress of Kufstein, for its part, offers a glimpse of over 800 years of history. But let’s not forget Erl!

Chaperoned by Jonas Kaufmann (at least) until 2030, the Tiroler Festspiele has historically been held in summer since 1998, but has managed to diversify its offering over the entire season. Principal conductor Asher Fisch‘s regular presence throughout the year will act as a binding force. Act I of Valkyrie, under his baton, will perpetuate the event’s Wagnerian heritage, with the exquisite vocal trio of Lise DavidsenJonas KaufmannRené Pape. The Austrian premiere of the dreamlike Picture a Day Like This, conducted by Corinna Niemeyer, is in keeping with the contemporary creation DNA of the Austrian event.

OPENING CONCERT

Tiroler Festspiele Erl Orchestra

Asher Fisch: Music director

Program :

– H. Pfitzner: Three Preludes by Palestrina

– R. Wagner: Prelude from Act I of Parsifal

– C. Debussy: La Mer

The program for this inaugural evening features thematic and textural juxtapositions. In the three preludes to the “musical legend” Palestrina, by the equally little-known Pfitzner, post-romanticism is interwoven with Renaissance polyphony and liturgical chorales. The opening piece of Parsifal, with its layers and strata, heralds the sublime solemnity and redemptive mood of Wagner’s final magnus opus. With La Mer, the orchestration touches on sensoriality in its intrinsic dynamics and play of light, evoking Impressionist painting and Japanese prints.

One of the leading figures in contemporary music, George Benjamin’s fourth opera, premiered at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence in the summer of 2023, was a major event. With his faithful librettist Martin Crimp, he takes on the format of the philosophical tale, and tells a universal and poetic story with many facets. A woman has one day to find a happy person who, according to a prophecy, can bring her recently deceased infant back to life. The parade of characters she encounters along the way marries a sensitive score with breathtaking textures and telluric energy.

SATURDAY, JULY 5, 2025 – ERL

GALA WAGNER

Tiroler Festspiele Erl Orchestra

Asher Fisch: Music director

Lise Davidsen: Sieglinde

Jonas Kaufmann: Siegmund

René Pape: Hunding

Program :

– F. Liszt : Preludes

– F. Liszt: Mazeppa

– R. Wagner: Act 1 of Die Walküre

As a true Romantic, Liszt was keen to push instrumental music to its limits, sculpting it on the basis of poetic language. The Préludes and Mazeppa, symphonic poems based on Lamartine and Hugo respectively, include, among other innovations, the development of a theme in multiple variants. This leitmotiv-based approach is a vertiginous inspiration for Wagner’s Tetralogy, of which The Valkyrie is the second part. Act I unveils the meeting of Sieglinde and Siegmund, followed by a forbidden love affair, triggering the fantastic epic between humans and gods that continues to shape the history of the operatic world.
