Milan is a magical city in winter. Illuminated by the end-of-year lights, the facade of the Duomo is an unforgettable sight. The proud, elegant city of Lombardy invites you to splurge in the luxurious boutiques of the Golden Quadrilateral. With its imposing ramparts, the Castello Sforzesco exudes an astonishing majesty and power under the December sky. Among the castle’s collections, now turned into a museum, is the Pietà Rondanini, Michelangelo’s ultimate (unfinished) masterpiece.

The days leading up to Christmas constitute a very special event in the life of Milanese: the inauguration of the season at the Teatro della Scala. From music lovers to politicians, the whole city comes together to vibrate to the rhythm of opera. The season opener is, of course, a new production under the direction of conductor Riccardo Chailly. Having opened previous years with early masterpieces, the Milanese musician now tackles an absolute monument to Verdi’s maturity: Don Carlo. As for the vocal cast assembled for this production – René Pape, Francesco Meli, Anna Netrebko and Elīna Garanča? Simply exceptional.

Francesco Meli: Don Carlo

Luca Salsi : Rodrigo

Ain Anger: The Grand Inquisitor

Jongmin Park: The monk

Anna Netrebko: Elizabeth of Valois

Conductor Riccardo Chailly loves Verdi. After opening previous seasons with Giovanna d’Arco, Attila and Macbeth, La Scala’s current musical director here interprets Don Carlo, the mature political opera by the composer of La Traviata. Among his predecessors, Tullio Serafin, Arturo Toscanini and Claudio Abbado also opened their seasons with this Verdian gem.

To celebrate this prodigious opera tinged with love and politics, La Scala has called on the renowned Spanish theatre-maker Lluis Pasqual. Former assistant to Giorgio Strehler and former director of the Théâtre de l’Odéon in Paris, Pasqual benefits from his theatrical experience and his work on Baroque aesthetics. Current La Scala superintendent Dominique Meyer has assembled a cast worthy of the Milanese theater legend: René Pape as Philippe II, Francesco Meli as Don Carlo and a most glamorous female vocal pairing with Anna Netrebko as Elisabeth and Elīna Garanča as Eboli. Prodigious!
