Malta will amaze you. Nested in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, this archipelago of mixed influences (Italian, Arabic and British) is more than just its main island. Three lands actually compose this jewel: Malta, Gozo, and the small Comino.
Its capital, Valletta, owns a teeming heritage while offering the enchantments of a splendid seaside resort. The Baroque richness of the city is explained by the presence of the mighty Knights of the Order of Malta, building their fortress in this very place during Middle Ages. Perched in a rocky promontory, Valetta rolls out a stupendously maintained centre from the 16th century, punctuated with splendid monuments, starting with Saint John’s Cathedral, which rivals in beauty with the finest Churches of Rome or Venice.
The soul of Matla is not only expressed in the stone, but it also resonates in music. Each winter, the Baroque Festival of Valetta celebrates this unknown facet of the Maltese heritage. This event that became one of the most major rendez-vous of the European Baroque scene brings to light the rare, forgotten, sometimes never seen before artworks.
The 2026 season program will delight all music lovers of the 17th and 18th century: The Spanish Tomás Luis de Victoria interpreted by the magnificent set of The Great Chapel, the Goldberg Variations of Bach in an impressive modern version for violins and string orchestra, or even a wonderful journey into the Napolitan Baroque music. Like every year, the Baroque Festival of Valletta helps you rediscover the priceless musical heritage of the island, as shown later on by the highly promising resurrection of Pelopida, by the Maltese Girolamo Abos, interpreted and staged in the Manoel Theatre of Valletta.
