Welcome to Naples! This beautiful Mediterranean city dazzles with its contrasts. Known as ‘Spaccanapoli’, the historic centre of Naples is an enchanting maze of lively narrow streets. For a moment of tranquillity, visit the Church of Gesù Nuovo, a sublime example of Neapolitan Baroque, or the magnificent Cathedral of San Gennaro. From Castel Sant’Elmo, you can enjoy a splendid view of the city’s bay, certainly one of the most beautiful in the world. In the distance, you can see the characteristic silhouette of Vesuvius: the most courageous (although the climb is not particularly difficult) can walk around its smoking crater…

A trip to Naples would not be complete without a performance at the Teatro di San Carlo. Inaugurated on 4 November 1737, this opera house promises a spectacular evening. Presented in concert version, Aida is an absolute masterpiece from Verdi’s mature period. The passionate love story between Aida and Amneris is performed here by none other than the two greatest opera stars of our time: Anna Netrebko and Jonas Kaufmann! Under the baton of the excellent Italian conductor Riccardo Frizza, Luca Salsi and Elizabeth DeShong complete an anthology vocal cast.

Une prêtresse

This is Verdi’s most grandiose and tragic opera. Created in 1871 at the instigation of Khedive Ismail Pasha, Viceroy of Egypt, who wanted to celebrate the opening of the Suez Canal and the Cairo Theatre, Aida is set in the time of the pharaohs. The Egyptian general Radamès falls in love with the slave (and daughter of the King of Ethiopia) Aida, but, alas, the two nations are at war, and passionate love and duty to the state remain irreconcilable, leading to a tragic fate for the characters. In this 19th-century masterpiece, Verdi boldly synthesises the magnificence of French Grand Opera and the orchestral complexity of German works, while retaining the Italian lyricism of bel canto. In this concert version, we rejoice in hearing Aida for what the opera also is: a heart-rending love story painted with rare psychological finesse. In the leading roles, Anna Netrebko‘s voice is a special effect in itself, while Jonas Kaufmann portrays with infinite subtlety all the facets of this Egyptian general, torn between his love for Aida and his military obligations. Completing the cast, Elizabeth DeShong (Amneris, daughter of the King of Egypt) and the formidable Luca Salsi (Amonasro, King of Ethiopia and father of Aida) will be conducted by one of the specialists in the transalpine repertoire, Riccardo Frizza. Supported by the chorus of the Teatro di San Carlo, the work promises striking accents of truth.

The historic capital of southern Italy, Naples is a city with a strong identity and exceptional heritage. Its historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to a unique concentration of Baroque churches, palaces, lively alleyways and artistic treasures. Don’t miss the Cathedral of San Gennaro, Spaccanapoli Street, which runs through the old town, or the National Archaeological Museum, one of the richest in Europe in terms of ancient art.

ANCIENT TREASURES AT THE GATES OF NAPLES
At the gates of Naples, exceptional archaeological sites immerse visitors in ancient history. In Pompeii and Herculaneum, cities frozen in time by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, the narrow streets, frescoes and Roman villas provide a strikingly accurate picture of daily life nearly two millennia ago. These captivating and moving visits reveal the artistic and architectural wealth of Roman civilisation. Other treasures, such as Villa Oplontis and the Phlegraean Fields, complete this unique immersion in antiquity, for a cultural journey of rare intensity.

THE AMALFI COAST
With its sparkling sea, hilltop villages and Mediterranean scents, the Amalfi Coast offers one of the most beautiful panoramas in Italy. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it reveals a succession of spectacular landscapes: steep cliffs plunging into turquoise waters, flower-filled streets in Positano, the timeless elegance of Ravello and the authentic charm of Amalfi. Each stop is an invitation to la dolce vita, with local flavours, seaside strolls and cultural discoveries. A timeless place to explore at your own pace, for an unforgettable getaway combining discreet luxury and natural beauty.
