All roads lead to Milan. The capital of Lombardy is the undisputed economic and cultural centre of the Italian peninsula. Upon arrival at Milano Centrale, visitors are struck by the grandeur and monumentality of the station’s architecture. The cathedral (and the extraordinary marble forest at its summit) and the Sforza Castle are two fascinating examples of this monumental heritage. While the astonishing Porta Nuova district (with its avant-garde buildings) bears witness to Milan’s current opulence, La Scala remains the absolute heart of the city and its inhabitants. Its Italian-style theatre, red boxes and incomparable atmosphere make it an essential destination for all opera lovers.
The temple of opera presents one of Verdi’s early masterpieces. Premiered at La Scala in 1842, Nabucco is conducted here by one of the world’s greatest conductors, Riccardo Chailly, director of La Scala since 2017. In a new production by Alessandro Talevi, the vocal cast brings together an anthology quartet: Francesco Meli, Lica Saldi, Michele Pertusi, Veronica Simeoni and, of course, the imperial Anna Netrebko as Abigaille.
