Milan is a must-see destination. Its Duomo is a monument in itself: built over nearly five centuries, the cathedral impresses with its Gothic facade and grand proportions. It’s a must to climb to the roof of the cathedral to see the spires and gargoyles. One of Milan’s treasures is Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper, housed in the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie. Another must-see gem is the Galleria Victor Emmanuel II, with its dazzling glass roof and vibrant activity.

In the evening, we invite you to hear a musical monument. In the legendary La Scala concert hall, the Ensemble Pygmalion performs Johann Sebastian Bach’s St John Passion. Continuing his irresistible rise, French conductor Raphaël Pichon has established himself more than ever as one of the great Baroque musicians of our time. A Bach Passion at La Scala is a programme not to be refused !

Ensemble Pygmalion

Raphaël Pinchon : Conductor

Anna Netrebko : Soprano

Jonas Kaufmann : Tenor

Programme :

– J.-S. Bach : St John Passion

Premiered on 7 April 1724, the St John Passion is the more lyrical of the two Passions composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Of course, the work is set in a liturgical context, but it is striking for the beauty of its solo arias (the sublime Aria Es ist vollbracht) and the majesty of its choral parts. The German composer would hardly have accepted the expression, but this passion is very much in the form of an opera, and it is only natural that the work should be performed in the world temple of lyric art: the Teatro della Scala. Founded in 2006, Ensemble Pygmalion tackles this Everest of the repertoire with contagious enthusiasm. With its lively rhythms and balance between contemplation and theatrical urgency, conductor Raphaël Pichon presents an unforgettable reading of Johann Sebastian Bach’s music.
