Florence is a remarkable musical city. Contrary to what its name might suggest, the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino is not limited to the lovely month of May. It’s a remarkable year-round season of recitals, concerts and opera performances.

Among the highlights is Bruckner’s stirring Symphony No. 8, conducted by Zubin Mehta (October 6, 2024). For this concert, the musician has chosen Bruckner’s last completed symphony, whose slow movement quite simply opens the gates to eternity.

On October 10, 2024, Daniele Gatti presents the admirable German Requiem, an essential milestone in Brahms’ music. The work is an immense spiritual fresco, whose depth and humanity Gatti is able to underscore.

On October 24, the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino offers a new production of Madame Butterfly, conducted by Daniele Gatti, directed by Lorenzo Mariani and starring Carolina Lopez Moreno in the title role. As Pinkerton, Piero Pretti has established himself as the leading Italian tenor of his generation.

The program
October 6, 2024 - Bruckner Symphony No. 8 with Zubin Mehta

Among the most important events is Bruckner’s deeply moving Symphony No. 8, conducted by Zubin Mehta (October 6). The Indian conductor is undoubtedly the modern musician who has had the greatest impact on Florentine musical life: musical director from 1985 to 2018, Mehta is now life conductor emeritus of the Tuscan orchestra. For this concert, the musician has chosen Bruckner’s last symphony, whose slow movement quite simply opens the doors to eternity…

October 10, 2024 - Brahms' German Requiem with Daniele Gatti

Since 2022, Florence has been under the direction of another great conductor. Former director of the Rome Opera and current head of the prestigious Dresden Staatskapelle, Daniele Gatti presents himself here to the full extent of his talent. On October 10, he presents the admirable German Requiem, an essential milestone in the music of Brahms. The work, which bears the subtitle “German” to reinforce the autobiographical and universal dimension of the project, is an immense spiritual fresco whose depth and humanity Gatti knows how to underline.

October 24, 2024 - Madame Butterfly, by G. Verdi with Carolina Lopez Moreno

On October 24, the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino presents a new production of Madame Butterfly, again directed by Daniele Gatti. The moving story of the geisha Cio-Cio San will be directed by Lorenzo Mariani (former director of Palermo’s legendary Teatro Massimo) and performed by Carolina Lopez Moreno in the title role. As Pinkerton, Piero Pretti has established himself as the leading Italian tenor of his generation. An unforgettable evening.
